Identification and Antibiotic‐Susceptibility Profiling of Infectious Bacterial Agents: A Review of Current and Future Trends

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most worrying threats to humankind with extremely high healthcare costs associated. The current technologies used in clinical microbiology to identify the bacterial agent and profile antimicrobial susceptibility are time-consuming and frequently expensive. As a result, physicians prescribe empirical antimicrobial therapies. This scenario is often the cause of therapeutic failures, causing higher mortality rates and healthcare costs, as well as the emergence and spread of … Show more

“…Other classes of antibiotic such as polymyxins (Colistin) cause biophysical changes in cell membrane permeability prior to cell death. Consequently, AST methods that rely on cell growth or metabolic activity do not report results in <6 h 12 , 13 . To address this, several rapid AST assays have been developed 13 15 .…”

“…Consequently, AST methods that rely on cell growth or metabolic activity do not report results in <6 h 12 , 13 . To address this, several rapid AST assays have been developed 13 15 . Flow cytometry has been widely proposed for rapid ASTs: antibiotic exposure leads to changes in susceptible strains of bacteria that can be measured by (label-free) light scatter and/or fluorescent viability markers 16 .…”

“…There are two other major chapters in infectious disease relevant for this review, apart from pure diagnosis: antibiotic susceptibility testing [153,154] and sepsis early diagnosis [155][156][157][158]. Table 2.…”

“…For this purpose, microbiological methods are used, i.e., plating onto a culture medium [5]. After confirming the presence of bacterial growth, the sensitivity of the detected pathogen to the main classes of antibiotic drugs is determined [6], and the antibiotics that best penetrate the affected tissues are selected.…”
