Identification and selection of low-phosphate-tolerant germplasm in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Abstract: Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major constraints to crop yield worldwide, and genotypes or cultivars with high phosphate use efficiency (PUE) sustain growth when exposed to phosphate stress. Therefore, it is imperative to develop the genotypes or cultivars with high PUE. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the PUE among 150 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes. Two high-tolerant and-sensitive accessions were selected. These two candidate materials were used to investigate the differences among… Show more

“…However, P use efficiency varied within a species. For example in Hordeum vulgare the expression of the gene HVPT5, that can be used to estimate phosphate use efficiency, was higher under low P availability in a tolerant accession, but its expression did not change in the sensitive accession ( Ren et al, 2016 ). Moreover, plants have inducible high affinity phosphate transporters and constitutive low affinity phosphate transporters encoded by Pht (phosphate transporter) gene family that ensure P uptake from the soil and distribution within different organelles of plant to sustain photosynthesis, respiration, and growth even under low P availability conditions ( López-Arredondo et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Two barley genotypes (GN121, low-P-tolerant, and GN42, low-P-sensitive) were screened and used for this research (Ren et al, 2016 ). Hydroponic experiments were conducted from early January to late May in 2017 at Gansu Agricultural University (Lanzhou, China).…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that barley has unique adaptive mechanisms in response to abiotic stress (Zeng et al, 2014 ; Quan et al, 2016 ). In previous experiments, we have identified two barley genotypes with contrasting phosphorus efficiency, which provide excellent germplasms for subsequent molecular research (Ren et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Two spring barley genotypes—GN121 (low-Pi-tolerant) and GN42 (low-Pi-sensitive)—were used (Ren et al, 2016 ). Seeds of GN121 and GN42 were obtained from Gansu Agricultural University (Lanzhou, China).…”
