“…Serrulatane quinonoid biflorin, which is isolated from the root tissue of Capraria biflora , has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria [38]. This activity is consistent with the traditional use to treat conjunctivitis, which may be associated with infections by S. aureus , S. epidermidis and Propionibacterium spp.…”

“…Bioautography was performed based on the method of Smith et al (2007) with minor modifications. Briefly, 30 μL (300 μg) of the stock extract (10 mg mL −1 ) was spotted onto silica gel 60F 254 aluminium thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates (Merck, Germany), together with 30 μL of ethyl acetate as a negative control and 0.5 μg of novobiocin (Sigma, Ireland) as a positive control.…”

“…Both disc diffusion and bioautography are qualitative measurements that indicate presence or absence of antibacterial agents, while the broth dilution method is a quantitative assay used for assessment of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (Rios et al 1988;Silva et al 2005;Valgas et al 2007;Wikler et al 2009a). The disc diffusion assay is simple and practical and is the most commonly used method for antimicrobial screening recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) (Wikler et al 2009b) while bioautography facilitates a more comprehensive investigation of the extract through a combination of sub-fractionation coupled with visualization of antibacterial efficacy of the fractions (Martini and Eloff 1998;Smith et al 2007). Ulva lactuca (Ulvophyceae; Ulvaceae), commonly known as 'sea lettuce', is found in abundance in Ireland and can be a nuisance in nutrient-rich areas such as harbours or ports.…”

“…Further, the cuticle has antibiotic properties and helps to prevent organ fusions (Luo et al, 2007;Smith et al, 2007;Weng et al, 2010). Thus, it is a structure vital for a plant´s survival on land.…”
