The aims at identifying and describing the occurrence ofanatomopathological and histopathological changes in Nile tilapia juveniles, naturally infected with Francisella noatunensis subsp. orientalis (Fno). The Nile tilapias of this study were cultivated in net cages in the region of the Araguari River basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and due to a mortality rate ranging from 40 to 60%, 64 fish samples were collected and sent for examination in the laboratory. At necropsy, granuloma-like nodules were observed in the spleen 59/64(92.2%), kidney 24/64 (37.5%), and liver 09/64 (14.1%). Fno was detected in 98% (49/50) of the samples by PCR. Upon analysis, astrong correlation was observed between external and internal lesions, since granulomatous lesions present in the spleen and kidney of the same animal simultaneously were also accompanied by skin ulcers, suggesting that the cutaneous lesion is related to the presence of Fno in tilapia and can be used as an indication for early diagnosis. Thus, the high prevalence of Fno observed in this research study allows characterizing an outbreak in the region. It is noteworthy that especially regarding the consumption of tilapia meat, although there are zoonotic species in the Francisella group, the zoonotic potential of Fno is not yet known and should be further studied.

Aquaculture parasite biodiversity dependents on multiple environmental characteristics, including water quality. The analysis of this relationship aims to support improvements in the production management of tilapia. For this purpose, a total of 100 juvenile fishes (Oreochromis spp.) and 30 water samples were collected at Valle del Mezquital in the Central-Eastern socioeconomical region of Mexico. A study of parasite biodiversity was carried out and water quality parameters were determined. Biodiversity in the habitat was measured using the Simpson diversity index, which considers the number of species present and the abundance of each one; we also calculate the Berger-Parker index to estimate the proportional importance of the most abundant species. In general, it was found that 86% of the examined specimens were parasitized. Parasite biodiversity was 11 genera (Simpson index = 0.55). Trichodina spp. (Ciliophora) was the dominant genus (Berger-Parker index = 0.51). The protozoa Apiosoma spp. was associated with the water hardness (Berger-Parker index = 0.57). Furthermore, the presence of monogeneans showed a positive correlation with the levels of nitrites and ammonium in the water (Berger-Parker index = 0.06–0.55). This characterization may represent a useful tool in the comprehensive management of parasites that affect the farmed tilapia. However, new data is necessary to expand the knowledge about the environment-host-parasite relationship.

Assessment of fish health is one of the efforts of farmers in minimizing losses due to disease. Rapid tests on fish health can be done through blood observations. This study aimed to determine the blood glucose profile of koi carp due to ectoparasite infestation from the level of blood glucose. The results showed that reported parasites from Blitar’s koi carp were Trichodina, Dactylogyrus, Gyrodactylus, Myxobolus, Thelohanellus, Ichthyophthirius, and Argulus. Trichodina showed the highest prevalence (100%) in this case while Thelohanellus was the highest intensity level (93.8±16.3). The results of blood glucose level measurement based on parasite infestation levels showed no significant difference (p>0.05) though the health problems caused by parasites in light, medium or heavy infestation. This research also indicated that the blood glucose profile could be used as a rapid method to detect fish health caused by parasites. We suggest that other variables such as nutritional status, life stage or feeding must be conducted to ensure the glucose role in parasite identification as a rapid method for the future work.
