Summer-to-autumn-flowering small-flowered spray-type (SAFS) chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) are commercially important in Japan, and there is an occasional increased demand for these flowers. However, under current cultivation methods, the quality of spray formations is compromised in order to maintain a sufficient production rate at times of peak demand. This study investigated the effect of interrupted lighting (IL), the intercalation of a period of long days (by night interruption) into the natural day length (NDL) period of growing, in order to regulate spray formations in SAFS chrysanthemum cultivars 'Haruka' and 'Subaru', in which lighting can markedly delay flowering. The effects of the NDL period before IL and those of the IL period were investigated. First, we investigated the effect of 2-12 days of NDL followed by 12 days of IL. Plants subjected to 2-6 days of NDL had longer flower clusters and a greater number of flower buds on the upper lateral flower stems and developed a broom-like spray. Next, we investigated the effect of 4-20 days of IL after 4 days of NDL. Plants subjected to 8-20 days of IL had longer flower clusters, more flower buds on the upper lateral flower stems, and broom-like sprays. These changes were more pronounced when the IL periods were prolonged. Our results showed that spray formation in SAFS chrysanthemum cultivars 'Haruka' and 'Subaru' can be regulated by controlling the timing and period of IL.Key Words: flower cluster length, light culture, long day, number of flower buds, short day.

During the floral transition, many plant species including chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) require continuous photoperiodic stimulation for successful anthesis. Insufficient photoperiodic stimulation results in flower bud arrest or even failure. The molecular mechanisms underlying how continuous photoperiodic stimulation promotes anthesis are not well understood. Here, we reveal that in wild chrysanthemum (C. indicum), an obligate short-day (SD) plant, floral evocation is not limited to SD conditions. However, SD signals generated locally in the inflorescence meristem (IM) play a vital role in ensuring anthesis after floral commitment. Genetic analyses indicate that the florigen FLOWERING LOCUS T-LIKE3 (CiFTL3) plays an important role in floral evocation, but a lesser role in anthesis. Importantly, our data demonstrate that AGAMOUS-LIKE 24 (CiAGL24) is a critical component of SD signal perception in the IM to promote successful anthesis, and that floral evocation and anthesis are two separate developmental events in chrysanthemum. We further reveal that the central circadian clock component PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATOR 7 (CiPRR7) in the IM activates CiAGL24 expression in response to SD conditions. Moreover, our findings elucidate a negative feedback loop in which CiAGL24 and SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CO 1 (CiSOC1) modulate LEAFY (CiLFY) expression. Together, our results demonstrate that the CiPRR7–CiAGL24 module is vital for sustained SD signal perception in the IM to ensure successful anthesis in chrysanthemum.

We developed a method to select summer-to-autumn-flowering small-flowered chrysanthemum cultivars suitable for the fine control of flowering using light culture. Budding under non-inductive night-break conditions was investigated from March to May. 'Subaru' and 'Sei-chigusa' showed no budding under night-break conditions during experimental periods. However, 'Sei-shimanami' showed a seasonal change in budding under night-break conditions, being late in March and very early in May. This indicated that premature budding under night-break conditions may occur more in late summer to autumn than in early summer. Therefore, we selected summer-to-autumn-flowering small-flowered chrysanthemum cultivars whose flower initiation is inhibited by night-break until cropping on the day of the autumn equinox in September in Okayama Prefecture. Several cultivars that showed later budding than the summer-to-autumn-flowering standard-type chrysanthemum cultivar 'Sei-un' used in light culture were selected for the fine control of flowering using light culture. We confirmed and evaluated the utility of these selected cultivars for flowering control using light culture in Fukushima, Akita and Ibaraki Prefectures. Although the flowering time of the selected cultivars varied among prefectures under natural daylength conditions, fine control of the flowering time was established using light culture. These results show that the method developed in this study is useful for selecting summer-toautumn-flowering small-flowered chrysanthemum cultivars suitable for the fine control of flowering by using light culture.Key Words：long-day leaf number, night-break, photoperiodic response, retarding culture, short-day plant
