Identification of juvenile hormone III in the hemolymph of Blattella germanica adult females by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry

Abstract: Juvenile hormone III was identified in purified hemolymph extracts of adult females of the cockroach Blatella germanica by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry with chemical ionization and selected ion monitoring. Under these conditions, juvenile hormones I and II were not detected within the sensitivity ranges of this analytical method. For quantification purposes a 5,5‐bisdeuterated analog of juvenile hormone III was synthesized and used as an internal standard. In general, juvenile hormone III titers obtain… Show more

“…Juvenile hormone III was found to be the only juvenile hormone homologue in B. germanica adult females, in both in viva and in vitro studies (Camps et al, 1987;Belles et al, 1987). Stoichiometry of the in vitro incorporation of the radiolabelled methyl group from methionine into juvenile hormone was also demonstrated ir this species (Belles et al, 1987).…”

“…However, the JH titer differs appreciably from a previous report with the same species. Camps et al (1987) noted a peak of 11 pg JH III/l hemolymph in day 5 females (basal oocyte length 1.43 mm), reared at 26°C. Our peak JH titer was 173.4 pg/l in day 7 females (basal oocyte length 2.03 Ϯ 0.04 mm), reared at 27°C (Fig.…”

“…JH III is the native JH of B. germanica (Camps et al, 1987), and the commercial source used is a mixture of isomers containing ca. 50% of the biologically active (10R)-JH III, thus the active dose applied was around 10 mg per specimen.…”
