Identification of markers tightly linked to sbm recessive genes for resistance to Pea seed-borne mosaic virus

Abstract: Two virus resistance loci on linkage groups II and VI have provided the only sources of natural resistance against Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV, Potyviridae) in the important crop plant Pisum sativum L. A combination of parallel approaches was used to collate linked markers, particularly for sbm-1 resistance on linkage group VI. We have identified sequences derived from the genes for the eukaryotic translation initiation factors eIF4E and eIF(iso)4E as being very tightly linked to the resistance gene clu… Show more

A number of recessive resistances to other members of the Potyviridae correspond to eIF4E or eIF(iso)4E (Robaglia and Caranta 2006).…”

“…The garden pea is in some senses the founding model for genetics, through Mendel's work in 1866. Pea has been further developed as a model for development traits such as compound leaf form (Tattersall et al, 2005), tendril formation (Hofer et al, 2009), transposon evolution (Jing et al, 2005), defense responses (Gao et al, 2004), starch and sugar synthesis (Barratt et al, 2001), and hormonal control of shoot branching (Beveridge et al, 2009). Common bean has been used to characterize the molecular basis of photoperiod sensitivity and determinacy (Kwak et al, 2008).…”

“…The eIF(iso)4E gene is also found in LG II (28). However, the recessive genes (i.e., cyv1, mo, and sbm-2) are not likely to be eIF(iso)4E because there was no difference in the deduced amino acid sequences of the eIF(iso)4E proteins between susceptible and resistant pea lines (26,28). Thus, if virus isolates emerge that overcome these recessive resistance genes, the viral determinant responsible might not be VPg.…”

“…The recessive resistance genes cyv1 (resistance to ClYVV), mo (resistance to BYMV), and sbm-2 (resistance to PSbMV) were mapped close to one another in pea linkage group (LG) II (26,27). The eIF(iso)4E gene is also found in LG II (28). However, the recessive genes (i.e., cyv1, mo, and sbm-2) are not likely to be eIF(iso)4E because there was no difference in the deduced amino acid sequences of the eIF(iso)4E proteins between susceptible and resistant pea lines (26,28).…”
