Identification of metabolites of malathion in plant, water and soil by GC-MS

Abstract: Metabolism of malathion (O,O,‐dimethyl S‐[1,2‐bis(ethoxy carbonyl)‐ethyl]phosphorodithioate) has been studied in plants, water and soil. A number of products identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), have been formed by de‐esterification, oxidation and hydrolysis of malathion. Hydrolysis of the P–S and C–S bonds occur in alkaline pH 8.0 and acidic pH 5.5, respectively. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Based on GC/MS analyses (see Fig. 2C the main oxidative degradation product of malathion in the natural environment (Kaur et al, 1997;Bavcon et al, 2003), and shows approximately 10-fold more toxic than its parent chemical (Snawder and Chambers, 1989). The ion peak at m/z 268 is tentatively assigned to the daughter ion of Products I b , which may be formed by removing an ethanol group (C 2 H 6 O, mol.…”

“…The ion peak at m/z 204 is tentatively assigned to the daughter ion of 2-mercapto-succinic acid diethylester (Product III b , C 8 H 14 O 4 S, mol. wt 206), which is a common hydrolytic product of malathion in water and soil (Kaur et al, 1997). The mass peak at m/z 204 may result from the loss of one hydrogen molecule from Product III b through VUV photoionization (Meng et al, 2010).…”

“…Residual pesticides are known to be decomposed by various natural conditions in the environment: by hydrolysis in water, 1,2) photodegradation, [3][4][5][6][7] metabolism in plants 8,9) and animals, 10,11) and bacteriological degradation in soil. 12,13) The degraded products of the pesticides then have the potential to be ingested by humans with agricultural products.…”

“…A number of metabolites of malathion formed in plants, soil and water have been formed as a result of various chemical reactions like de-esterification, oxidation and hydrolysis (Kaur et al, 1997). Presently, the detection of malathion and its degradative metabolites is done routinely and successfully with the advanced techniques like GC/FID (Bavcon et al, 2003) as welll as GC/MS (Talebi and Shibamoto, 2007).…”
