Identification of novel canine rabies virus clades in the Middle East and North Africa

Abstract: Four novel phylogenetic clades of canine rabies virus (RABV) variants have been identified in the Middle East and North Africa. The three novel Middle Eastern clades comprise RABV isolates from the borders between Israel and neighbouring countries. The North African clade (Africa 4) comprises four RABV isolates from Egypt and one from Israel. We characterized various RABV lineages antigenically by using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to the nucleoprotein (N) and phylogenetically by analysis of entire N gene … Show more

“…The concept of dog-related lineages spilling into wildlife species with further host shifts was consistent for all phylogentic groups shown as part of CosC (I to VI) (8,10,(21)(22)(23)(24)(31)(32)(33)(34). This tendency was also consistent for other groups outside the CosC, such as group IX (35,36).…”

“…Indeed, phylogenetically these groups are closely related, and their separation could have occurred about 100 years ago. Given the previous estimation that Asian (dog) RABV variants appear at the root of a time-scaled tree [29], Arctic RABV variants probably evolved via a northerly spread, as recently proposed [19]. Furthermore, Arctic-like viruses appear to have compartmentalized earlier than Arctic viruses.…”

“…Rabies is a serious enzootic disease throughout the Middle East, notably in Jordan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon and the Islamic Republic of Iran (5). In Asia, 8 countries have been reported as rabies-free: Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (6).…”
