Identification of Pectin Degrading Enzymes Secreted by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and Determination of Their Role in Virulence on Rice

Abstract: Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae (Xoo) causes the serious bacterial blight disease of rice. Xoo secretes a repertoire of plant cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs) like cellulases, xylanases, esterases etc., which act on various components of the rice cell wall. The major cellulases and xylanases secreted by Xoo have been identified and their role in virulence has been determined. In this study, we have identified some of the pectin degrading enzymes of Xoo and assessed their role in virulence. Bioinformatics analy… Show more

“…As an alternative, pectin can be degraded into peptic polymers by pectin enzymes. Although pectin has complex structures, which can be digested by a series of pectin enzymes, including hydrolases, lyase, and esterase ( 48 50 ). Since one enzyme generally targets only specific structure, and more defined oligosaccharides can be released when compared with chemical method.…”

“…Pectins can also contain more complex structural motifs, such as rhamnogalacturonan I (RGI) and rhamnogalacturonan II (RGII), which contain variable backbone structures and extensive side chain modifications. Given the abundance and structural nature of pectin in plant cell walls, a wide variety of microbes have acquired enzymatic pathways for the degradation and metabolism of this polysaccharide (5,7,(9)(10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…Pectin is known as a natural prophylactic substance against poisoning with toxic cations, and its hemostatic and curing effects are well-documented in healing ointments [50]. Pectin is degradable by enzymes produced by bacterial, fungal and plant cells, and not present in human tissues [51][52][53]. Thus, pectin is degradable, at least partly, only in the intestinal tract populated with bacteria.…”
