Identification of pro- and mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor in human saliva

Abstract: Objective-Growth factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), are polypeptides that are involved in the maintenance, survival, and death of central and peripheral cells. Numerous growth factors have been identified in saliva and are thought to promote wound healing and maintenance of the oral epithelium. The aim of this study was to determine if BDNF is also found in human saliva.Methods-Whole, unstimulated saliva samples (n=30) were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot using an anti-human BDN… Show more

“…Furthermore, the presence of proBDNF and mature BDNF in human saliva has been reported by Western blotting analysis, but not ELISA method [31]. Given the opposing physiological roles of proBDNF and mature BDNF in the brain and peripheral organs, it would be of great interest to determine the exact concentrations of precursor and mature BDNF in the body fluids (e.g., blood, CSF, saliva) of patients with these diseases, and healthy control subjects [9].…”

“…BDNF has trophic functions in the hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain [20][21][22][23][24] as well as the retina, motor neurons, the kidneys, saliva, and the prostate [25]. The trophic effects of BDNF are mediated via the tropomyosine receptor kinase B (TrkB) and possibly also the lowaffinity nerve growth factor receptor (LNGFR, aka p75) [26].…”
