Identification of process parameters affecting distortion of disks for gear manufacture ‐ Part II: heating, carburizing, quenching

Abstract: In this work the applied approach to ‘Distortion Engineering’ is based on the consideration of the entire manufacturing chain of disks, from casting to the final heat treatment, made from the steel grade 20MnCr5 (SAE 5120). Part II presents the results of the investigations concerning the final heat treatment parameters on the distortion of the disks, whereas part I describes the effect of the influence parameters from casting to cutting. The disk geometry was selected, in order to reduce the expected complexi… Show more

“…These considerations may give an explanation for a part of the relative high scatter in the change of the dishing slope (grey shaded area in Figure 9). Clausen et al described a second harmonic of the average dishing slope that accounts to a mean change of (0.09 € 0.01) lm/mm in the amplitude [12]. The estimated change of the dishing slope caused by inhomogeneous segregation is in the same order of magnitude.…”

“…Relevant shape changes were also identified for the ovality of disks [1,12] and have been presented at the IDE 2008. Analysis using the design of experiment (DoE) method showed a high significant influence of hardenability on the phase angle of the ovality.…”

“…Both approaches led to a reduced scatter of the change of dishing as well (for more details [4]. However the influences of the material properties and other processes of the manufacturing chain are being analyzed and have been presented elsewhere [2,6].…”

“…Derived from these measurements the dishing is calculated as documented by Clausen [5]. The toothing is characterised by the tooth alignment error, profile angle error and adjacent pitch error.…”
