Identification of rebars in a reinforced mesh using eddy current method

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of this paper is to present an expert system for identification of the basic reinforcement concrete structures parameters like: rebars diameter, thickness of a concrete cover and a kind of rebar's alloy (class). The results of measurement carried out by the eddy current transducers were utilized for the designed system. Measured waveforms are represented by two kinds of attributes, the d-factors represent a waveform shape, and a maximal amplitude. In order to extract an association rules betw… Show more

“…The eddy current method uses the phenomena of electromagnetic induction to detect inner flaws or inclusions in the examined materials. This method is a natural choice in the case of conducting materials and the possibility of using it in rebar detection has been discussed earlier [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. Here we present the multi-frequency technique and we propose a method that may be used for the problem of identification of chosen parameters of the rebar on the basis of obtained signals.…”

“…The system utilized was presented in previous work [ 34 , 35 ]. It consists of an E-shaped differential transducer ( Figure 12 b) and four subsystems: an XYZ scanner, an excitation subsystem, a data acquisition subsystem and a controlling computer.…”

“…The electromagnetic methods may be used to localize rebars in the structure, precisely estimate basic structure parameters (such as the thickness of the concrete cover, the rebar’s diameter, the rebars class [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], and detect corrosion or other flaws [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]). The most significant advantages of the methods from this group are the direct impact on reinforcement, the low damping of electromagnetic waves by concrete and the high spectrum of frequencies that can be used.…”
