Identifying the barriers and facilitators to participation in physical activity for children with Down syndrome

Abstract: The results highlight the important role of families in determining how much physical activity children with Down syndrome undertake and the effect that common characteristics associated with Down syndrome can have on maintaining an active lifestyle. Future research needs to concentrate on successful methods of encouraging physical activity, such as ensuring social interaction is part of the activity, and eliminating barriers to physical activity such as the a lack of appropriate programmes for children with D… Show more

“…27,[36][37][38] However, none of the intervention approaches were based on behavior change theory or specifically targeted identified physical activity determinants which are important components of successful intervention design. 10,11,17 As a result, conclusions cannot be made regarding intervention components that impacted outcome variables, if the observed effects were specifically due to the intervention or if interventions could be maintained long-term.…”

“…Consequently, parents have expressed the need for someone else 4 to provide this type of support (Menear, 2007;Mahy, 2010). Barr and Shields (2011) reported concerns linked specifically with safety as a consequence of behavioural difficulties from ID conditions. These factors, in turn, may be contributing factors to that of a more sedentary lifestyle at home due to parents being unable to supervise organised or spontaneous PA.…”
