Introduction: Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) is characterized by normal cochlear function and abnormal neural function. Diagnosis must be performed early, so that rehabilitation is adequate and minimizes the negative consequences. Objectives: exhibit the procedures used for the early diagnosis of ANSD in children by developing a protocol, highlighting the importance of conducting studies on the incidence of ANSD and raising awareness among health professionals. Methods: systematic literature review. The electronic databases PubMed and Web of Science were used, applying the boolean operators "AND" and "NOT", with the terms, "Auditory Neuropathy", "diagnosis", "children", "hearing aids" and "cochlear implantation”. Results: 41 studies were analyzed after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, dating from 2015-2021. The USA is the country with the highest number of articles published. Discussion: The diagnosis of ANSD is made through otoacoustic emissions, cochlear microphonics and auditory brainstem response. This must be carried out in the first six months of life, and it is necessary to identify the possible etiology. Conclusion: the proposed objectives were achieved, namely the elaboration of the protocol. However it’s necessary to carry out studies on the incidence of ANSD in Portugal, as well as raising awareness among health professionals to this pathology.

Objective: To assess the association between pediatric Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and olfactory performance. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted including 17 patients under 18 years diagnosed with IIH at a tertiary hospital and 17 healthy age-and sex-matched subjects. All participants underwent the semi-objective chemosensory Sniffin' Sticks test for evaluation of odor threshold (OT), indicative of peripheral olfactory function, and odor identification (OI), reflecting higher cognitive olfactory processing. Scores were compared and referred to the updated normative values. Demographic, clinical, and neuroimaging data were collected from the medical files. The patients with IIH were reassessed for olfactory function and clinical state at the subsequent follow-up, under treatment. Results: Compared to controls, the IIH group had a significantly lower mean OT score (6.41 ± 3.43 vs 10.21 ± 2.79, p ¼ 0.001) and higher rate of OT score below the 10th percentile for age and sex according to the normative values (47.1% vs 0%, p ¼ 0.001). There was no significant between-group difference in mean OI scores (9.82 ± 1.63, vs 10.59 ± 1.84, p ¼ 0.290). OT scores were not associated with sex, age, body mass index, neuroimaging abnormalities, or lumbar puncture opening pressure. At the follow-up assessment, the OT scores were improved (9.36 ± 4.17 vs 6.7 ± 3.32, p ¼ 0.027) whereas the OI scores were unchanged (9.88 ± 2.5 vs 9.69 ± 1.58, p ¼ 0.432). Conclusions: As reported in adults, children and adolescents with IIH appear to have a selective reversible deficit in olfactory detection threshold, which may imply a reduction in peripheral olfactory perceptual ability. Future studies should examine the predictive value of olfactory function for IIH.

Objectives: To characterize patterns of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and tinnitus in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Setting: Tertiary referral center. Patients: Adult patients diagnosed with IIH via lumbar puncture (LP) between 2010 and 2020 who had available audiograms. The study included a total of 40 patients; 33 women, and 7 men with a median age of 43. Interventions: Diagnostic LP and audiogram. Main Outcome Measures: Otologic symptoms, ophthalmologic signs, hearing thresholds, cerebrospinal fluid opening pressures.Results: The most commonly reported symptoms were tinnitus in 28 (70%, 23 pulsatile and 5 tonal), aural fullness in 11 (28%), and vertigo in 10 (25%). Twenty-nine patients had ophthalmologic examinations and 18 had evidence of papilledema. Twenty-five (63%) patients had hearing loss in at least one ear at one frequency range. Patients presented with both unilateral and bilateral hearing loss across low, middle, and high frequency ranges. No significant association was observed between hearing loss threshold and LP opening pressure except for 250 Hz in the left ear. After stratification by tinnitus group (pulsatile, tonal, and no tinnitus), no significant difference was found between mean hearing loss threshold at different frequencies. In addition, no significant mean age difference was identified in patients within each tinnitus group. Conclusions: There was no classic pattern or presentation for hearing loss in our IIH patients. They developed sudden, unilateral, or bilateral SNHL in low, middle, or high frequency range. The degree of hearing loss did not correlate with CSF opening pressure.
