Modern power grids are becoming more stressed, more complex, and beginning to have a significant integration of energy sources based on power electronics devices, which significantly changes the dynamics of power grids affecting the design and operation of Remedial Action Schemes such as UVLS and UFLS, where the conventional operation philosophy of these schemes is based in operating parameters such as thresholds, amount, and location of the load shedding fixed regardless of the event. Therefore, they are not adaptable to the various conditions of the modern power grids, causing their misoperation. In recent years, a wide variety of adaptive schemes around the world have been proposed as a solid solution with good performance, since its main characteristic is its ability to consider the magnitude of the event in its load shedding, turning them into more selective and with flexibility in their operating parameters. The aim of this article is to review the development of adaptive schemes in UVLS and UFLS over the years, identifying how to approach the design of such adaptable schemes, which operating parameters tend to give them greater flexibility and which have been less explored. Then broken down the methods used to give flexibility to the operating parameters of UVLS and UFLS, and also that other devices such as FACTS and ESS can enhance its operation, with the aim of provide a broad vision of how to give them flexibility to these parameters and which of them are identified as an opportunity to improve the performance of the adaptive schemes. Finally, the review includes some RAS with adaptive approach implemented in real systems which some of them includes load shedding, to show how these schemes have reconfigured their design and operation by giving flexibility to some operating parameters, it is possible to show the need of modern power grids to have adaptive RAS.

Background: An increase in the load demand has been forcing the electrical components to work near their allowable limits. The transformation of the power system in terms of technology and geographical stretch has imposed the necessity of employing advanced protection schemes in the system. The system integrity protection scheme (SIPS) has evolved as an effective measure with the gradual sprawl of the conventional grid with local measurements to a smart grid with wide-area measurement system. Aims: SIPS is a rapidly growing field in the power system and thus the study of its performance analysis, implementation methods, and applications is necessary. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of SIPS technology. Materials & Methods: In this paper, SIPS definition and classification are briefly discussed. SIPS normalization schemes that include load shedding, controlled islanding, generation rejection, ou-of-step prediction, relay settings are elaborated. To implement these normalization schemes, various methods such as index-based, optimization-based, WAMS based, EAC based, and ML-based are discussed and compared. Finally, a comparative assessment is framed based on SIPS applied for different power system issues such as transient instability, voltage instability, overloading, line contingency, protection security, etc. Results: It is observed that most of the proposed SIPS are implemented for improving transient stability. The preferred solution for implementing the SIPS by the researchers is load shedding. It is also observed that there is a lack of implementation of SIPS with renewable energy systems.

The future distribution networks (DNs), commonly known as the smart grid is expected to be reliable, efficient, and can accommodate renewable energy resources. The smart distribution network has to withstand the technical challenges related to the integration of distributed generations (DGs). Among these technical challenges, protection malfunctioning with the increased integration of DGs is one of the important issues, which requires a great concern. Thus, a protection philosophy, which can suit the future smart grid requirements with respect to increased integration of DGs, has to be devised. In this paper, an adaptive protection technique, which is based on the characteristics of fault-current and load-current variation, is proposed. In the proposed method, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) monitor the status of circuit breakers (CBs) and DGs. If any status change occurs, the calculation and relay agents are triggered to update the IEDs. DigSILENT PowerFactory is used to verify the suggested philosophy. Especially DigSILENT Programming Language (DPL) is used to model the adaptive protection. The solar power plant in the Antalya vicinity in Turkey is used to verify the proposed method. The results of the simulation study show the correct operation and effectiveness of the proposed method.
