IgG antibody reactivity to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto antigens in patients with morphea in Colombia

Abstract: These results could be explained by cross-reactivity; however, the partial shared reactivity of sera from patients with syphilis and morphea/LSA does not rule out the possibility that a new spirochetal agent, unrelated to B. burgdorferi or Treponemas, may be the causative agent of morphea/LSA in Colombia.

“…In parallel, spirochetes were detected by focus-floating microscopy in three (50.0%) out of the six suspected cases [2]. Our patient had a negative serology, and he has never been in the Amazonic region, but authors support the hypothesis that geographical aspects can play a role in the association of B. burgdorferi and morphea in South America, because cases of this possible correlation have also been reported in Venezuela and Colombia [11]. …”

“…[12][13][14][15][16][17] In Latin America, the detection of antibodies against B. burgdorferi associated with morphea has been reported in Venezuela and Colombia. 18 The presence of borreliosis in patients from the Amazon region of Brazil has been recently confirmed. 19,20 However, information regarding the association of morphea and Borrelia infection in Brazil is still not available.…”
