“…5 We often hear the idea that (neo)fascism has traded jackboots for suits, which means that those who see a fascist revival do not expect it to happen under the same forms as in its original manifestation. And yet, as argued by the doyen of the Italian historians of fascism (Gentile, 2019), this feeds the myth of the 'eternal nature' of fascism (Eco, 1995), built on the idea that the latter lacks any ideological core. Ultimately, this implies that every politician adopting one of the many features associated to fascism (of which Eco listed fourteen 6 ) can easily be defined a fascist (as happened to many of them, also from Christian Democracy or leftist politicians considered 'too moderate'), by just being associated to one or more of these traits.…”

Once considered an anomaly for its polarized pluralism, then marked, over the last three decades, by frequent alternations between populist and technocratic governments, Italy is now the only country in Western Europe whose coalition government is led by a party usually classified in the populist radical right family, Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia). While this means that the country has finally its first female Prime Minister, understanding the trajectory of the party is important not just for the state of Italian politics but also for comparative politics more in general. Taking stock of the recent literature on Meloni’s party, it appears that the choices made by the Fratelli d’Italia – in Italy and in Europe – can resonate beyond the national borders especially in terms of illiberal ideologies and practices of right-wing parties.

O artigo analisa a natureza do governo Bolsonaro, da sua base social de apoio mais ativa e da crise política que lhe deu origem. Polemiza com a bibliografia clássica e atual sobre o fascismo e, operando com um conceito de fascismo inserido na tradição marxista, caracteriza o governo e sua base social como (neo)fascistas. Sustenta a necessidade de construir uma tipologia das crises políticas nas sociedades capitalistas e procura mostrar que a natureza e a dinâmica da crise política brasileira de 2015-2018 são típicas da crise política que dá origem ao fascismo. Insere o bolsonarismo no contexto da democracia ainda existente no Brasil, que caracteriza como uma democracia burguesa em crise.THE BRAZILIAN PATH TO FASCISM The article analyzes the nature of the Bolsonaro Government, its most active social base of support, and the political crisis that gave rise to it. It polemizes with the classical and current bibliography on fascism and, operating with a concept of fascism embedded in the Marxist tradition, characterizes the government and its social base as (neo)fascists. It argues for the need to develop a typology of political crises in capitalist societies, showing that the nature and dynamics of the 2015-2018 Brazilian political crisis are typical of the political crisis that gives rise to fascism. Finally, it places bolsonarismo in the context of the democracy still existing in Brazil, which it characterizes as a bourgeois democracy in crisis.Keywords: Brazilian Politics. Political Crisis.LE CHEMIN BRÉSILIEN VERS LE FACISMEL’article analyse la nature du gouvernement Bolsonaro, sa base sociale de soutien la plus active et la crise politique qui les a engendrés. Il polémique avec la bibliographie classique et actuelle sur le fascisme et, opérant avec un concept de fascisme ancré dans la tradition marxiste, caractérise le gouvernement et sa base sociale comme (néo) fascistes. Il soutient le besoin de développer une typologie des crises politiques dans les sociétés capitalistes et entend montrer que la nature at dynamique de la crise politique brésilienne de 2015-2018 sont typiques de celle qui donne naissance au fascisme. Tuttavia, l'architettura giuridica implementata da Rocco in Italia venne trasposta in forme originali nello stato corporativo di Vargas, influenzato nondimeno dall'esempio del Portogallo salazarista e comunque maggiormente disposto a concedere alcune garanzie a un mondo del lavoro in precedenza poco o nulla protetto (Gentile 2013). Nelle esperienze dittatoriali dell'America latina furono proprio le correnti più reazionarie del cattolicesimo a promuovere soluzioni corporative che inauguravano forme di organizzazione degli interessi sociali attraverso un impianto autoritario fascista (Pinto 2020, 110).…”

The article focuses on the role played by Corporatism in the connections between Catholicism and Fascism in Europe. The aim is to sketch a development marked by four variations: 1) the convergence on corporatist doctrine as a meeting point between the Catholic tradition and the Fascist movement; 2) the distancing of certain Catholic circles from the corporatist order that Fascism achieved in Italy; 3) the realignment of Catholic political thought on the question of the state; 4) the hybridization between Catholic projects and the Fascist model that characterized the corporatist laboratories of various European and Latin American countries. Premessa Per studiare i rapporti tra le culture politiche del fascismo e del cattolicesimo, il tema del corporativismo offre un buon angolo prospettico, dal quale è possibile osservare sia l'articolazione delle posizioni ideologiche, sia le interazioni sul piano politico, istituzionale, organizzativo.
