Emotion-Inspired Painterly Rendering

When painters draw, they do not draw what they see; they reflect their emotions through specific forms of artistic expression. Through this empathy, humans derive aesthetic satisfaction. Psychological studies on art and emotions have been extensively conducted since the 20th century, and it has been found that artistic activities such as painting and writing have a positive effect on human emotions. However, it is difficult for a non-professional painter to express human emotions in a picture using artistic elements. The aim of this study was to propose a "user emotion-inspired painterly rendering process" to help non-professionals reflect their emotions through painting. To accomplish this aim, a painter-rendering system that automatically creates digital paintings with parameterized painting features was used. We analyzed the correlation between human emotions and the rendering parameters affecting the painting style through a user study, and we estimated the rendering parameter values for specific emotions. The results showed that colors and emotions were closely linked, and color scheme was an influential factor in the paintings. Furthermore, we developed a recoloring algorithm based on Kobayashi's three color systems classified as human emotions, and we created paintings that better reflect specific emotions. The proposed algorithm was validated through a user satisfaction survey. Hence, the proposed system can improve a user's understanding of painting and create paintings that reflect specific emotions.

Previous gradient mesh recoloring methods usually have dependencies on an additional reference image and the rasterized gradient mesh. To circumvent such dependencies, we propose a user scribble-based recoloring method, in which users are allowed to annotate gradient meshes with a few color scribbles. Our approach builds an auxiliary mesh from gradient meshes, namely control net, by taking both colors and local color gradients at mesh points into account. We then develop an extended chrominance blending method to propagate the user specified colors over the control net. The recolored gradient mesh is finally reconstructed from the recolored control net. Experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach on multiple gradient meshes. Compared with various alternative solutions, our method has no color bleedings nor sampling artifacts, and can achieve fast performance.

In this paper, we present a computationally simple yet effective image recoloring method based on color harmonization. Our method permits the user to obtain recolored results interactively by rotating a harmonious template after completing color harmonization. Two main improvements are made in this paper. Firstly, we give a new strategy for finding the most harmonious scheme, in terms of finding the template which best matches the hue distribution of the input image. Secondly, in order to achieve spatially coherent harmonization, geodesic distances are used to move hues lying outside the harmonious sectors to inside them. Experiments show that our approach can produce higher-quality visually pleasing recolored images than existing methods. Moreover, our method is simple and easy to implement, and has good runtime performance.
