Imaging Diagnosis—magnetic Resonance Imaging Features of a Cerebral Hemangioblastoma in a Dog

Abstract: The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of a cerebral hemangioblastoma in a 9-year-old dog are described. Imaging revealed a well-defined contrast-enhancing lesion of the rostral forebrain that appeared extraparenchymal. Histopathology of the excised mass showed clusters of small blood vessels interspersed with interstitial cells staining positive for neuronal specific enolase, features consistent with a cerebral hemangioblastoma; the mass also appeared intraparenchymal after further immunohistochemistry … Show more

“…In the veterinary literature, only two cases of haemangioblastoma have been reported, both in dogs. In one case, the neoplasm was diagnosed as intramedullary and was located at the level of the first thoracic vertebra and in the other case the tumour had an intracranial location .…”

“…In the veterinary literature, only two cases of haemangioblastoma have been reported, both in dogs. In one case, the neoplasm was diagnosed as intramedullary and was located at the level of the first thoracic vertebra and in the other case the tumour had an intracranial location . We report the clinical, neurological, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, as well as pathological examinations and the clinical outcome of a spinal intradural–extramedullary haemangioblastoma in a dog that was successfully treated with a hemilaminectomy and metronomic chemotherapy.…”

“…In human and veterinary medicine, there has been debate regarding whether hemangiomas represent arteriovenous malformations, vascular hamartomas, or endothelial neoplasms . Hemangioblastoma is a similar vascular tumor, but the vascular network is separated by stromal cells . Hemangioblastoma may represent a variation of hemangioma.…”
