Imaging findings in craniofacial childhood rhabdomyosarcoma

Abstract: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the commonest paediatric soft-tissue sarcoma constituting 3–5% of all malignancies in childhood. RMS has a predilection for the head and neck area and tumours in this location account for 40% of all childhood RMS cases. In this review we address the clinical and imaging presentations of craniofacial RMS, discuss the most appropriate imaging techniques, present characteristic imaging features and offer an overview of differential diagnostic considerations. Post-treatment changes will b… Show more

“…Malignant neoplasms of this region are exceedingly rare in infants [7] . As esthesioneuroblastoma and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma occur later in childhood, rhabdomyosarcoma [8] and metastatic neuroblastoma are among the few high-grade neoplasms capable of a similar radiographic appearance in this age group. Surgical resection of SGAT is curative and in most cases has been performed via an endonasal approach.…”

“…Epidermal cysts typically associate restriction in diffusion and low ADC values and are located frequently in the head and neck at first decade [39]. However, there is still controversy over whether DWI can play a role in the differentiation between vascular anomalies like hemangiomas and aggressive soft-tissue tumors such as rhabdomyiosarcoma [40]. …”
