Imaging spectrum of renal oncocytomas: a pictorial review with pathologic correlation

Abstract: ObjectivesThe purpose of this pictorial review is to present the imaging spectrum of renal oncocytomas with radiological-pathological correlation.ConclusionThe differences in tumour cellularity (high cellularity or low cellularity with abundant stroma) and haemorrhagic/cystic change contribute to a wide spectrum of imaging findings of renal oncocytomas. Imaging findings substantially overlap those of common subtypes of clear cell and non-clear cell renal cell carcinomas. Multifocal renal oncocytomas are not ra… Show more

“…Although it is widely believed that a central stellate scar is its main characteristic, it was reported present in only 46% of cases and may also appear in 26% of chRCC [38]. Moreover, there are overlapping imaging features between ccRCC and oncocytoma making their differentiation challenging [39]. Therefore, a reliable radiomics method that is non-reliant on the presence of a central scar to characterize oncocytomas would be an invaluable diagnostic tool.…”

“…The degree of enhancement in contrast imaging and the timing of peak enhancement is variable in oncocytoma. [7] When the tumor is heterogeneously enhancing, it mimics clear cell type of renal cell carcinoma. When it presents as a hypovascular homogenous mass, it mimics chromophobe or papillary types of renal cell carcinoma.…”

“…Renal oncocytosis is a recently established disease entity defined as diffuse replacement of the renal parenchyma by numerous oncocytic tumors, such as hybrid tumors, chromophobe RCCs, renal oncocytomas, and oncocytic renal parenchyma. [3542]…”
