El presente artículo de investigación recoge los resultados parciales de una pesquisa sobre Gabriel Tarde (jurista, juez de Sarlat en Francia, criminólogo, sociólogo; 1843-1904), la imitación y los crímenes de muchedumbres. El objetivo es explorar las categorías principales que utiliza el autor francés del siglo XIX y comprender las líneas generales de su pensamiento, y del porqué, después de más de cien años de su muerte, su obra vuelve a tener interés en el ámbito de la criminología global y en particular en la disciplina en territorio latinoamericano. En donde se ha vuelto a traducir y estudiar con renovado interés, en especial en Argentina, donde se encuentran sus mayores estudiosos. Los principales hallazgos de este trabajo tienen que ver con la actualidad de algunas de sus ideas como: la imitatividad del delito, el carácter rizomático de la sociedad y la naturaleza de las muchedumbres. La conclusión más relevante del texto es la siguiente: más allá del tipo de lenguaje o metáforas usadas por el autor (que en ocasión se tornan anacrónicas y reproducen cierta violencia simbólica), su obra contiene claves para entender muchos fenómenos sociales actuales, en particular los delitos que cometen las muchedumbres y las invenciones criminales.
