-The paper presents the synthesis and performance of an immobilized phospholipase A1 with practical application for oil degumming. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) had a number of properties indicating this polymer as a good enzyme carrier. The combination with alginate made a macro-porous structure, evidenced by SEM analyses. When the process time in boric acid solution was 30 minutes, the results revealed that beads prepared with 10% (w/v) PVA and 2% (w/v) sodium alginate in 4% (w/v) boric acid and 2% (w/v) calcium chloride solution exhibited high immobilized enzyme activity, immobilization yield and stability. The pH and temperature optimum for the PVA-alginate immobilized phospholipase A1were 5.6 and 58 °C, respectively. The enzyme immobilized in the beads retained 50.37% of the initial activity in the eighth cycle. The enzyme biocatalyst immobilized in the beads retained 78.58% of the initial activity after storing 6 weeks at 4 °C.

Three kinds of matrices (calcium alginate, gelatin, and PVA) were employed as supports to immobilize lipases from Y. lipolytica KKP 379 via physical adsorption. The stability of biocatalysts (free and immobilized) was evaluated by measuring the enzyme activity before and after treatment with the method based on the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl laurate. Two fractions of enzymes were immobilized: cell-bound (yeast biomass) and extracellular (supernatant). The yield of immobilization and catalytic properties of immobilized lipases were investigated. Satisfactory results for lipolytic activity and biocatalyst stability were obtained for cell-bound enzymes immobilized in alginate (0.38 U g -1 d.m.) and crosslinked gelatin (0.18 U g -1 d.m.). Immobilization of the supernatant was successful only on the alginate (0.026 U g -1 d.m.). After lyophilization, no significant difference was noticed between treated and untreated biocatalysts. Lyophilized catalysts were successfully immobilized in all three matrices, but the process reduced their lipolytic activity probably due to an insufficient amount of water in the reaction solution.

Nano-adsorbents of Fe-Al-Ce trimetal hydroxide (FAC) were immobilized in porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via cross-linking with boric acid. Spherical composite granules of 3-5 mm in size that would not cause a large pressure drop in a packed bed were obtained. SEM images showed that the FAC particles were embedded in holes of about 10 μm in the PVA granules, while the surface pores of the granules were only nano-scale in size. Thermal analysis showed that the FAC and PVA in the granules combined tightly by forming a chemical bond. The mechanical stability of the granules decreased with increased FAC concentration, and increased with increased PVA concentration. The fluoride adsorption capacity of the granules increased with FAC concentration and decreased with PVA concentration. For acceptable mechanical stability and adsorption capacity, a FAC concentration of 12% and PVA concentration of 7.5% were suggested. The adsorption capacity of the granules prepared under suggested concentrations was 4.46 mg/g at an initial fluoride concentration of 19 mg/L and pH 6.5. Immobilization of the nano-adsorbent in porous polyvinyl alcohol granules is a promising granulation method for water treatment in packed beds.
