Immune and Anti-oxidant Functions of Ethanol Extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi in Mice Bearing U14 Cervical Cancers

Abstract: Background: The objective was to study the effect of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi ethanol extracts (SBGE) on immune and anti-oxidant function in U14 tumor-bearing mice. Materials and Methods: U14 tumor-bearing mice were randomly divided into eight groups: a control group, a cyclophosphamide (CTX) group, three dose groups of SBGEⅠ (high, medium, low), and three dose groups of SBGEⅡ (high, medium, low). After two weeks, the thymus and spleen weight indices of mice bearing U14 cervical cancer were calculated. E… Show more

“…[ 22 ] Thymus and spleen are the most important immune organs in human body, which can through participating in the differentiation and maturation of T and B immunologically active cells to promote the cellular and humoral immunity, hence, the indexes of immune organs are important indicators for immunologic function. [ 23 24 25 ] As shown in Figure 2 , compared to the normal control group, the relative thymus and spleen indexes of the tumor-bearing mice were significantly decreased ( P < 0.05), suggesting that the thymus and spleen of the mice were probably damaged and diminished due to the tumor transplantation. [ 26 ] Although oral administration of BFAT and CTX could obviously increase the thymus and spleen indexes as compared with the model control group ( P < 0.05), the effects of the high and medium groups were more significant than the CTX group ( P < 0.01).…”

“…Due to the importance of CDDP chemotherapy for cancer patients, numerous studies have focused on protective strategies to alleviate the side effects of CDDP. Herbal and herbal-derived medicine has been recognized as an attractive approach for cancer therapy with few side effects (21,22). Furthermore, evidence suggests that various herbal medicines have synergistic effects when combined with CDDP by enhancing its toxicity against cancer cells, prolonging the patients' survival time and preventing the side effects of chemotherapy (2325).…”

“…The increases in the spleen and thymus indexes reflected enhanced T lymphocyte proliferation and improved immune function. Usually, the anti-tumor effects of Chinese herbal medicine are associated with immune function regulation [25, 26]. According to Chinese cancer research standards, herbal medicine is only considered to be effective as an anti-cancer treatment when the tumor inhibition rate is higher than 30% [27, 28].…”
