“…Based on this and other studies, the proPO has been suggested critical for the defence against pathogenic infection in shrimps (Amparyup, Charoensapsri & Tassanakajon 2009;Charoensapsri et al 2011;Fagutao et al 2012). This upregulation of proPO-2 expression is also consistent with previous research in which the proPO gene was found to be upregulated in crustaceans by potential immune stimulants or bacterial challenge (Arockiaraj et al 2013;Hauton, Brockton & Smith 2007;Liu et al 2013;Moseley 2000;.). The upregulation of proPO generally coincided with a high level of immunity and resulted in higher survival (Tobian et al 2004;Hauton et al 2007;Wang et al 2008;Hsieh et al 2013).…”

“…Previous studies have also demonstrated that SOD activity increases in hemocytes and muscle cells of L. vannamei treated with an immunopotentiator, and the survival rate increased following bacterial infection, suggesting that SOD regulates the immune response in shrimps (Campa-Cordova et al, 2002). In crustaceans, SOD and phenoloxidase are two enzymes with roles in the immune system, which may be used as indicator enzymes to detect immune function (Amparyup et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2013). Induction of cytMnSOD gene expression by KK-42 is advantageous for adaptation to harsh environments as it strengthens immunity against pathogenic bacteria and viruses and enhances tolerance, which is likely to be one of the molecular mechanisms through which KK-42 increases survival of prawns infected with A. hydrophila.…”

“…Unlike fish and other vertebrates, crustaceans lacks adaptive immune system and therefore solely rely on innate immune response generated primarily from the immunocompetent cells and mucus of intestinal mucosal membrane 9,70,71 . In the present study, we selected 10 genes that are reported to play a crucial role in innate immune response of crayfish earlier 7,9,[72][73][74] . We found upregulated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and crustacean's hemolymph genes in the probiotic fed marron.…”
