“…23 Furthermore, our statements are supported by the excellent results with the application of ICC on LBC as previously reported by Leung et al, Dabbs et al and Tabbara et al [24][25][26] The latter authors demonstrated the good evaluation of estrogen and progesterone receptors made on FNAC specimens from breast primary carcinomas. In our series, we did not consider the cytological diagnosis of ATC based on the clinical history combined with the morphological findings which excluded an ATC diagnosis.…”

“…The results reported here demonstrate the great efficacy of using cytologic evaluation to ascertain precise diagnoses in both technical types of sample preparation: smeared sediment and LBC. Not only does LBC offer some additional morphologic advantages (clearer background, cell enrichment, and better nuclear details), but residual LBC material is also very useful for ancillary methodologies, including ICC evaluation and molecular tests . It is important to highlight this point, because LBC diagnoses are comparable to those obtained with traditional smears and offer a value added in terms of potential use for additional methodologies, including receptor gene rearrangements by polymerase chain reaction analysis or chromosome translocation by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis.…”

“…In addition, a strong diagnostic aid in assessing cytologic morphology is the increasing and accurate application of ancillary techniques (both molecular testing and immunocytochemistry [ICC]) to cytology, including malignant effusions, with diagnostic and predictive intent . Several groups have attempted to define the best combination of immunomarkers for diagnosing effusions, which has resulted in a lucky application of these techniques for diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic purposes, especially when LBC is adopted …”

“…The use of ICC on the cells stored in the preservative ThinPrep2000™ solution yields excellent results with most immunoreagents in terms of staining pattern, intensity of the reaction and less amount of reagent due to the clear background and smaller size of the ThinPrep2000™ slide (Dabbs et al, 1997; Leung and Bedard, 1999; Rossi et al, 2006). …”

“…The use of more than one immunomarker is a further guarantee for a correct diagnostic approach, especially when a concordant panel is expressed (Rossi et al, 2006) and with excellent results also in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant follicular neoplasms (Dabbs et al, 1997; Leung and Bedard, 1999; Schmitt et al, 2008; Fadda et al, 2011a). …”
