Immunohistochemical analysis of microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1 and clusterin expression in lens epithelial cells of patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome

Abstract: Abstract. Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is an age-associated, sight disorder affecting elastic fibers in the eye and visceral organs but its exact etiology remains unknown. The purpose of the current study was to determine the morphology and ultrastructure of lens epithelial cells (LECs), and to use immunohistochemistry to examine localization of microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1 (MGST1) and clusterin. Anterior lens capsules were obtained from 24 patients (13 PEX and 11 controls) who underwent phacoemu… Show more

“…Although clusterin is over-expressed in various stress and pathological conditions, it is downregulated in the anterior chamber of the exfoliative eyes. This suggests the possible contribution of common CLU variants in exfoliation development (Calero et al 2000;Zenkel et al 2006;Magalhães & Saraiva 2011;Padhy et al 2014;Fan et al 2015;Stafiej et al 2017). A CLU SNP (rs3087554) was observed in an Australian population that was identified to be nominally associated with XFS.…”

“…Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) was first described in 1917 by John G. Lindberg [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. The term pseudoexfoliation is used to distinguish from the similarly appearing, but uncommon and clinically different exfoliation syndrome of anterior capsular damage occurring in extreme infrared radiation exposure in glass blowers [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. PXF is a systemic disease in which tissues in the body accumulate white/gray material consistent with extrafibrillar material [ 1 , 2 , 3 ].…”

PXF is a systemic disease in which tissues in the body accumulate white/gray material consistent with extrafibrillar material [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. In the eye, PXF material accumulates chronically and progressively in both extraocular and intraocular tissue due to excess production and/or decreased breakdown of elastic microfibrillar components [ 4 ].…”
