Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study of the immune cell system and epithelial surfaces of the respiratory organs in the bimodally breathing African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822)

Abstract: Acetylcholine (Ach) represents the old neurotransmitter in central and peripheral nervous system. Its muscarinic and nicotinic receptors (mAChRs and nAChRs) constitute an independent cholinergic system that is found in immune cells and play a key role in the regulation of the immune function and cytokine production. Gas exchanging surfaces of the gills and air‐breathing organs (ABOs) of the sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus were investigated using ultrastructural and confocal immunofluorescence techniques.… Show more

“…RCs are peculiar cells, equipped with granules containing serotonin and piscidin [ 81 ], a potent antimicrobial peptide [ 82 , 83 , 84 ]. They act via Toll-like receptor (TLR), a type of evolutionarily conserved receptor [ 40 , 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 ] activated in response to viruses, bacteria or organic or chemical stress [ 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 ].…”

“…In fish species, including sharp-tooth fish and air-breathing fish, IL-1β is one of the earliest-expressed pro-inflammatory cytokines, and is secreted by blood monocytes, tissue macrophages, activated endothelial cells, activated T lymphocytes, granulocytes, and other cell types. It mediates the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, enabling organisms to respond immediately to infection [ 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 ]. Moreover, IL-1β has a critical role in the launch of local and systemic responses to different stimuli via natural killer cells, T and B lymphocytes, and activating macrophages [ 72 , 73 ].…”

“…Two neurotransmitters are generally associated with stress and psoriasis: serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DOPA). Serotonin is a potent neurotransmitter involved in nervous, immune, and endocrine systems [ 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 ]. Low levels of 5-HT increase the production of some inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, which induces the activation and deterioration of keratinocytes via NF-kB, which is activated by IL-17A in the prefrontal cortex and in the hippocampus, thus worsening the symptoms of psoriasis [ 165 , 166 ].…”
