Immunologic studies in Burkitt's lymphoma

Abstract: An evaluation of the immune status in patients with Burkitt's lymphoma was performed. Cellular immune responses were normal in both untreated patients and in patients in remission. An impairment of primary antibody response and low IgM levels were noted in untreated patients with Burkitt's lymphoma but not in patients in remission. A defect in humoral immunity associated with the presence of acive Burkitt's lymphoma is postulated; this defect is possibly related to IgM metabolism.

“…(Henle & Henle, 1966;O'Conor, 1961), the unusually high cure rate after relatively small doses of drugs (Ziegler et al 1967;Burkitt, 1967), and the occurrence of spontaneous cures (D. P. Burkitt, personal communication), all suggest that the disease is strongly influenced by the patient's immune reaction. Some have postulated that the difference between B.1.…”

“…There is considerable interest in the role of cell-mediated immunity in Burkitt's lymphoma (Zeigler et al, 1970;Klein, 1971;Stjernsward et al, 1970;Golub et al, 1972), an attractive hypothesis being that chronic heavy malarial infestation interferes with the host defences against the lymphoproliferative action of EB virus (Kafuko and Burkitt, 1970;Harris, 1970;Burkitt, 1970;McGregor, 1972). In the case of other African tumours, information is less complete but the differences in the pattern of malignant disease between Western countries and Africa south of the Sahara and, even over quite short distances, within Africa itself, suggest that environmental factors are involved in their aetiology (Burkitt, 1973).…”

“…Despite this, until the advent of the HIV epidemic and application of organ transplant technologies, which necessitated immunosuppressive therapy to prevent organ rejection, no clear evidence linking immunosuppression in individuals to the risk of BL was adduced [18]. Other provocative questions went unanswered.…”
