Immunological and histopathological characterization of cutaneous candidiasis

Abstract: Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis constitutes a heterogeneous group of syndromes, characterized by non-invasive infection of the skin, nails and mucosal membranes by the fungus Candida spp. Although symptoms are heterogeneous, in all cases there is a reduction in protective cytokines, favouring the development of disease. The normal role of cytokines in skin lesions is not well understood. The present study aimed to investigate the progression of disease, understand specific cellular and molecular components i… Show more

“…The efficacy of the bacillus formulation was evaluated in vivo using a cutaneous fungal infection model . Infection was induced by intradermally injecting C. albicans pseudohyphae (50 µL, 5 × 10 7 , hyphal formation) into the dorsal region of 48 C57BL/6 mice (Envigo, Jerusalem, Israel) .…”

“…10 11 Fungal infections often occur in immunocompromised or immune-deficient patients, initiating disease when normal host-pathogen equilibrium is disturbed. [11][12][13] This dog was also likely exposed to P jadinii while outside running on the nature trail. In this case, leflunomide was being administered to control concurrent immune-mediated polyarthritis.…”

“…The frequency of invasive mycoses due to opportunistic fungal pathogens has increased significantly over the past few decades, likely due to the increased use of immunosuppressive drugs to treat chronic canine diseases 10 11. Fungal infections often occur in immunocompromised or immune‐deficient patients, initiating disease when normal host–pathogen equilibrium is disturbed 11–13. This dog was also likely exposed to P jadinii while outside running on the nature trail.…”

“…Candida infections occur if there are factors that nourish their growth or facilitate tissue invasion, such as weak host immune system. The causative factors consist of endogenous factors, such as physiological changes in pregnancy, obesity, iatrogenic, endocrinopathy, diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic disease, age and immunologic, and exogenous factors such as climate, skin cleanliness, foot bath habits and contact with those who suffer the same disease [ 3 ].…”
