Immunomodulatory activity of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Salvia officinalis L. and Syzygium aromaticum L. essential oils: evidence for humor- and cell-mediated responses

Abstract: Our findings establish that the immunostimulatory activity found in mice treated with clove essential oil is due to improvement in humor- and cell-mediated immune response mechanisms.

“…The plant was reported for antimicrobial [10, 18–22], nephroprotective [22], anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory [23] activities. Traditionally, ginger is reported totreatnausea, vomiting, asthma, cough, palpitation, inflammation, and dyspepsia, loss of appetite, constipation, indigestion, and pain in different parts of the world [24]. Similarly, ginger is used, traditionally, for treating common cold, stomachache, cough, fever, and influenza in Ethiopia [25, 26].…”

“…The immunomodulatory effects of clove (Syzygium aromaticum), ginger (Zingiber officinale), and sage (Salvia officinalis) EOs were assessed by Carrasco et al in healthy and cyclophosphamide-immunosuppressed mice administered the EOs orally, by determining the antibody titers with hemagglutination (humoral immune response) after immunization with sheep red blood cells (SRBCs), and measuring paw volume after challenging with a second SRBC suspension (delayed-type hypersensitivity, cellular immune response) [41]. Clove EO increased the leukocyte number, augmented the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response, while in immunosuppressed mice, it restored cellular and humoral immune responses.…”
