This study investigated the effect of daily oral administration with allicin levels (0, 5 and 10 mg/kg of female body weight), 30 days pre‐insemination, on reproductive performance in vivo and in vitro, immunity, and oxidative stress of rabbit does under high ambient temperature. Niliparous NZW does (n = 105) were randomly divided into three groups (35 in each) treated with 0, 5 and 10 mg allicin dissolved in 2 ml distilled water, respectively, for 30 days pre‐insemination. At the end of treatment (30 days), does were artificially inseminated with fresh diluted semen of 20 fertile NZW bucks. Reproductive performance and ovulatory response parameters were determined. Serum biochemicals, enzyme activity, immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM) and antioxidant status were determined on day 30 of treatment. Serum progesterone and prolactin were determined pre‐insemination (30 days of treatment), on 15 days of pregnancy and 7 days post‐partum. Results showed that both allicin levels increased live litter size, and bunny viability rat and litter size at birth and weaning. Allicin levels increased ovulation rate and improved embryo quality. Number of total follicles decreased only with 10 mg allicin. Progesterone increased pre‐insemination, 15 days of pregnancy and 7 days post‐partum progesterone by allicin levels. Prolactin pre‐insemination and on day 7 post‐partum increased with 10 mg allicin. Serum total proteins, albumin, globulin, IgG and IgM increased, while glucose, aspartate and alanine aminotransaminases, and thiobarbituric acid reaction decreased by both allicin levels. In conclusion, the mechanism by which allicin administration 30 days pre‐insemination to improve the reproductive performance of rabbit does is based on that allicin can play an important role, as a natural exogenous antioxidant, increasing immune response and reducing lipid peroxidation.

Garlic has long been utilizing as a folk remedy for various diseases. In this study, the effect of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) (125 mg kg -1 ), garlic oil extract (GOE) (125 mg kg -1 ), and the combination of both extracts (AGE+GOE) (62.5 from each) was studied over a parasitic disease namely schistosomiasis. Determination of some radical scavenging activities including Ferric Reducing Ability Power, Hydrogen peroxide, DPPH and nitric oxide radical scavenging activities were studied. The antioxidant properties of the mentioned extracts on both normal and Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice was also studied. The liver tissues were analyzed for the level of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) known as biomarkers for oxidative and reducing status, respectively. The results showed that almost all tested extracts showed high effect of radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, remarkable decrease in worms and tissue eggs were analyzed in all tested extracts as AGE+ GOE (1015 ± 1.41) represented higher level of prohibition in total number of worms and eggs compared to infected untreated mice (1502 ± 2.13). The garlic extracts were potent antioxidants with slight differences.

Saffron Granuloma Antioxidants Worm SEMThe present study is designed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Crocus sativus(saffron) aqueous extract (CSE) alone or in combination with praziquantel on Schistosoma mansoni infected mice. Parasitological, immunological, pathological and immunohistochemical parameters and surface topography of worms were determined. Treatment of S. mansoni infected mice with saffron or PZQ revealed a significant reduction in worm burden, hepatic and intestinal ova count with a decline in granuloma diameter. There was an increase in total IgG and IL-10 blood levels after treatment with PZQ and/or CSE. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase levels were improved in infected mice treated with CSE in comparison with infected mice. Male worm surface ultrastructure examination showed a swelling, rupture of numerous tubercles with marked decrease in spines and severe peeling of tegumental dorsal surfaces after treatment with saffron. In conclusion, administration of aqueous extract of Crocus sativus is effective treatment for S. mansoni infection.
