Immunomodulatory Effect of Gold Sodium Thiomalate on Murine Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Abstract: Induction of IL-2 production and increased expression of CD25 were observed in C57BUIO mice after weekly treatment with gold sodium thiomalate (GST). LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV) infected mice treated with GST survived longer, had less cervical lymph node swelling, lower spleen weight, and fewer abnormalities in the expression of the cell surface markers, CD4, CD8a and CD45R1B220 on spleen cells than those that were not treated with GST. Thus, GST treatment may be beneficial through a decrease in diseas… Show more

“…This started a not very successful use of gold compounds as a remedy for tuberculosis, but in the slipstream of its use as an antibiotic, clinical knowledge leading to recognition of the immuno-modulatory effects of gold ions accumulated. Hence, since 1927 gold salts have been used in the treatment of rheumatic arthritis, and when more recent medication fails gold thio salts are still used (see also Hashimoto et al 1992;Yamaguchi et al 2001).…”

“…AuTMs' modulation of the immune system, with a resultant decrease in gag expression, increase in IL-2 secretion and expression of surface markers such as CD4? in LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus-infected mice (Yamaguchi et al 2001) points to a role for gold-based compounds in the stimulation of an immune response against HIV-like viruses and thus HIV.…”

“…1c). This is also an anti-arthritic agent that has been shown to have anti-HIV effects (Okada et al 1993;Yamaguchi et al 2001 (Yamaguchi et al 2001). LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus causes a disease in mice that presents as immunosuppression and lymphoproliferation with features similar to AIDS.…”

“…Owing to their mutationresistant antimicrobial activity, they are being used in different pharmaceutical formulations as antibacterial clothing (5), burn ointments (6) and coating for medical devices (7). Besides, gold (Au) compound and AuNPs have potential therapeutic applications include anti-HIV activity, anti-angiogenesis (8,9), anti-malarial agent (10) and antiarthritic agent (11). Fabrication of NPs could be undertaken using either chemical or biological systems (12).…”
