Immunomodulatory effects of EGCG fraction of green tea extract in innate and adaptive immunity via T regulatory cells in murine model

Abstract: Green tea is a widely consumed beverage known for its beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, and cardioprotective properties. Here, we administered epigallocatechin gallate fraction of green tea extract (EGTE) to mice for 6 weeks and examined the effects on the innate and adaptive immune responses by measuring phagocytic and natural killer (NK) cell activity, as well as antigen-specific proliferation, cytolysis, cytokine secretion, and antibody production. Our data sho… Show more

“…The mechanism of action is uncertain but various immunomodulatory and antiproliferative properties have been proposed. 52,53 EGCG is formulated as a 10% ointment which is marketed in most European countries as Veregen â (Aresus Pharma, Strausberg, Germany) and in the UK as Catephen â (Kora Healthcare, Swords, Ireland). A 15% ointment preparation is only available in the US.…”

“…Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound isolated from plants and has been demonstrated to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in preclinical endometriosis models [125,126]. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) is a green tea extract that exerts immunomodulation activities via increased peritoneal phagocytic activity and NK cell cytolysis [127]. EGCg has been shown to inhibit angiogenesis, fibrosis, and endometriotic cell growth in preclinical models, and a phase II clinical trial is currently ongoing (Clinical Trials.gov ID: NCT02832271) [128].…”

“…The catechin polyphenols, such as epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate, and EGCG, are the major components responsible for the beneficial effects of green tea [11,12]. The anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects of these catechin polyphenols have been demonstrated in many animal and epidemiologic studies [13][14][15]. Among these polyphenols, EGCG is the most abundant component with potent antioxidant activity [16].…”
