Immunomodulatory effects of Longdan Xiegan Tang on CD4+/CD8+ T cells and associated inflammatory cytokines in rats with experimental autoimmune uveitis

Abstract: Longdan Xiegan Tang (LXT) is a mixture of herbal extracts commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine that may exert immunomodulatory effects for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. However, the detailed mechanisms that mediate the actions of LXT are unclear. The present study induced an experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) model in Lewis rats via injection of IRBP1177‑1191 emulsion. The model was used to investigate the effects of LXT on EAU rats and assess the efficacy of LXT by measuring clinical manif… Show more

“…Yongdamsagantang has been reported to have antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties [40]. Furthermore, it is known to have a cellular immunomodulatory effect, which is reported to alleviate inflammatory responses of HZ to control pain and rash [41]. In all 3 studies, Yongdamsagantang was prescribed at the beginning of PHN treatment.…”

“…Crocin is a part of the group of hydrophilic carotenoids with either mono- or di-glycosyl polyene esters of crocetin with D-glucose and/or D-gentiobiose as carbohydrate residues [34]. A variety of traditional Chinese herbal preparations contain GF, such as Longdan Xiegan Pill [35], Yinchenhao Decoction [36], or Zhizichi Decoction [37]. In the traditional Chinese patent medicine, GF has been used as an ingredient in Huanglian Jiedu Decoction [38], Tongluo Jiunao Injection [39], and Xingnaojing Injection [40].…”

“…Qingkailing injection alleviated autoimmune uveitis in rats by inhibiting the development of Th1 and Th17 effector cells as well as the release of key cytokines (Tian et al, 2012). Another herbal extract mixture often used in TCM, Longdan Xiegan Tang, can effectively relieve EAU symptoms, prevent the differentiation of uveitogenic CD4+T cells, and diminish the release of proinflammatory cytokines including IFN-γ, IL-17, and TNF-α (Tang et al, 2016). Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi (HQ)) is a sweet-flavored and warm-natured TCM herb that goes to the lung, spleen, liver, and kidney meridians.…”
