Osteons are composed of concentric lamellar structure, the concentric lamellae are composed of periodic thin and thick sub-lamellae, and every 5 sub-lamellae is a cycle, the periodic helix angle of mineralized collagen fibers in two adjacent sub-lamellae is 30°. Four biomimetic models with different fiber helix angles were established and fabricated according to the micro-nano structure of osteon. The effects of the fiber periodic helical structure on impact characteristic and energy dissipation of multi-layer biomimetic composite were investigated. The calculation results indicated that the stress distribution, contact characteristics and fiber failur during impact, and energy dissipation of the composite are affected by the fiber helix angle. The stress concentration of composite materials under external impact can be effectively improved by adjusting the fiber helix angle when the material composition and material performance parameters are same. Compared with the sample30, the maximum stress of sample60 and sample90 increases by 38.1% and 69.8%, respectively. And the fiber failure analysis results shown that the model with a fiber helix angle of 30° has a better resist impact damage. The drop-weight test results shown that the impact damage area of the specimen with 30° helix angle is smallest among the four types of biomimetic specimens. The periodic helical structure of mineralized collagen fibers in osteon can effectively improve the impact resistance of cortical bone. The research results can provide useful guidance for the design and manufacture of high-performance, impact-resistant biomimetic composite materials.

Fique is a fiber of South American origin that has adequate properties to be used as reinforcement in composite materials, recently there have been various research for the development of composite materials with this fiber type. This article compiles different studies into composite materials reinforced with fique fiber. Initially discussed the issues related to the properties and treatments most commonly used to fiber to improve their quality and adhesion, then the types of matrix and the main manufacturing techniques that have been used for the manufacture of composites reinforced with fique fiber are described, followed by the different tests and characterization tests that have been applied to them to know their main properties and finally, their applications and the use of micromechanical models to describe them.

Influence of oxygen/argon duoplasmatron synergistic modification on the mechanical properties of UHMWPE/vinyl ester composites

This study reveals double plasma modification of ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers by oxygen/argon duoplasmatron source to investigate the synergistic effect of double plasma mixture on the mechanical performance of UHMWPE/vinyl ester laminated composites. The single‐factor experiment was used to determine the preparation process parameter range. The modified fiber was characterized and mechanical properties of UHMWPE/vinyl ester composites were evaluated. The results showed that the UHMWPE fiber modified by double plasma treatment with oxygen/argon duoplasmatron source exhibited more hydroxyl groups than untreated fiber and the single plasma‐modified fiber with oxygen source, and the surface water adsorb capacity was significantly improved, which contributed to the combination of resin and fiber surface. The tensile strength of the composite with double plasma modification increased to 380.48 MPa, which was higher than untreated and oxygen plasma treated samples by 36.9% and 18.9%, respectively. The GIC value was even 78.1% higher than that of oxygen plasma‐treated sample, and the interlaminar shear strength was increased by 19%. In terms of low‐velocity impact response, the absorbed energy of double plasma modified composites was increased, confirming that the mechanical resistant performance was enhanced by the modification with oxygen/argon duoplasmatron source.
