Impact of a new vaccine clinic on hepatitis B vaccine completion and immunological response rates in an HIV-positive cohort

Abstract: High HBVV completion and response rates in this HIV cohort were enabled through the use of multiple interventions, including the use of SMS text message reminders and routine referral for DD vaccination.

“…14,15 Sexual health and HIV outpatient clinics are well placed to facilitate targeted/catch-up HPV vaccination for the high risk groups including HIV-infected and HIV negative MSM, particularly in the setting of similar effective models for hepatitis B vaccination. 29 The landscape in relation to HPV infection, prevention and associated disease is evolving rapidly. The recently available nonavalent HPV vaccine (HPV-9v) offers protection against an additional 5 oncogenic HPV types (31, 33, 45, 52, and 58) associated anal cancers in MSM.…”

“…The institution of specific vaccine clinics and electronic (including text) reminders may be useful for ensuring series completion. 48 Protective HBV vaccine responses among HIV-infected compared with HIV-uninfected persons are dissimilar, with rates of 18-68% and 60-95%, respectively. [49][50][51][52] Patients vaccinated prior to HIV infection have seroprotective responses similar to uninfected persons, 53 suggesting that the completion of the vaccine series prior to HIV infection is optimal.…”

“…48,57,59,67,112 The dangers of delaying vaccination include the risk of infection and the potential missed opportunity for vaccination due to lost follow-up. 117 In general, the administration of vaccines should occur at the initial HIV visit, or shortly thereafter in cases in which prevaccination testing is needed.…”

“…Improving the consistency of access to funded vaccination nationally and increasing the uptake of vaccination in these communities are identified priorities in the National Hepatitis B Strategy 9 and ready access to the free HBV vaccine, not surprisingly, increases uptake. 15 Support for and evaluation of novel vaccination strategies, including incentive payments 16 and dedicated clinics, 17 could also be considered to improve vaccination rates in these priority populations.…”
