Purpose To assess the psychological status of keratoconus sufferers and to determine the relationship between depression and visual impairment in this group of patients. Methods Fifty-six patients with keratoconus and forty-seven age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects were retroprospectively analyzed. Every participant underwent a complete ophthalmological examination. Keratoconus diagnosis was confirmed with corneal topography and tomography. Zung Depression Inventory Questionnaire and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were completed by everyone. Results Visual acuity (logMAR 0.53 ±0.30 versus 0.11 ± 0.16), PHQ-9 score (10.20 ± 4.00 versus 5.40 ± 5.01), and Zung score (46.52 ± 8.70 versus 38.53 ± 8.41) showed a statistically significant difference between keratoconus patients and healthy controls (p < 0.001 for all). Worse visual acuity was strongly correlated with older individuals (rho = 0.339, p=0.011) and higher PHQ-9 (rho = 0.765, p < 0.001) and Zung score (rho = 0.672, p < 0.001). Conclusion Depressive disorders appear to be directly associated with keratoconus, both in frequency and intensity. Worse visual acuity and older age could be identified as predictive factors for their emotional status. Moreover, the disease itself could be recognized as an independent risk factor for depression development, underlying the need for close monitoring and supportive management. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first in the literature to elaborate the association between keratoconus and depression, by assessing two different questionnaires simultaneously.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss. Mental health and quality of life (QoL) are important issues for patients with glaucoma because visual impairment can be related to those. Analysis of mental health status or QoL in undiagnosed glaucoma patients can be free of the bias caused by awareness of the disease itself. In this study, the association between mental health status or QoL and undiagnosed glaucoma, along with the effects of visual acuity or visual field damage was investigated. Among individuals in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) V (2010–2012), subjects 40 years or older were included. KNHANES is a cross-sectional study using a stratified, multistage, probability sampling survey. The KNHANES includes questionnaires to assess psychological health, including depression, sleep duration, psychological stress, and suicidal ideations. To evaluate QoL, the KNHANES includes the EuroQoL, which is composed of a health-status descriptive system (EuroQol 5-dimension, EQ-5D) and the EQ visual analog scale (EQ-VAS). The proportion of people reporting symptoms of “some or severe problems” in all 5 dimensions of the EuroQoL-5 instrument, including anxiety/depression, was higher in the glaucoma group than in the nonglaucoma group. The subjective health status reported by the EQ-VAS was lower in the subjects with glaucoma than in those without glaucoma. Suicidal ideation was greater in subjects with glaucoma than in those without glaucoma (P = 0.005). After adjustment for demographic factors, glaucoma subjects were more likely than those without glaucoma to have some or severe problems with anxiety/depression (odds ratio 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.26–2.49). Worse best corrected visual acuity was associated with more problems with a lower EQ-5D score in glaucoma subjects. Individuals who had undiagnosed glaucoma were more depressed than those without glaucoma. QoL can be affected by glaucoma, especially in patients with worse visual acuity.

Fitting contact lens requires skills and a range of fitting sets .These facilities are mostly available at the tertiary centers .Patients in small towns and poor awareness about the contact lens options by ophthalmologists lead to letting the patient continue with the spectacles .Funicular keratoconus is the worst, where the patient is made to continue with one eye vision [19][20][21][22]. Many times the patients have been fitted with lenses and the bad experience of ill fitting lenses have led to the drop out.…”

Aim of the Study: To analyse the mental health status and psychological well being of the keratoconus patients using rigid contact lenses compared to spectacle corrected ones. The objective is to study if the correcting vision with contact lenses impacts the mental health status of the patients suffering from keratoconus. Methodology: In the month of January to April, 2015 a cross sectional study was conducted in Ahooja eye hospital, Gurgaon, Haryana, India and Rajan eye care hospital, Tnagar, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. Thirty two keratoconus patients were enrolled for the study and subjects were asked to the mental health status questionnaire MHI 38 with informed consent. Fifteen were habitual contact lens wearers and seventeen non contact lens wearers who volunteered to participate this study. Study included those contact lens users who wore lenses all waking hours and had been wearing them for atleast one year. All the questions were score coded for entering the data in Microsoft Excel sheet. The status of mental health was based on eight indicises which provided information on mental well being. Results: 17 males and 15 females participated in this study. The mean age of the participant was 28.03± 5.56 (range 20-39 years). The mean score of keratoconus patients of non contact lens wearer and contact lens wearer in Anxiety was 32.84

Abstract: Our results suggested lower trait anxiety and better vision-related and health-related QoL in KC patients 1 year after successful CXL treatment. Better QoL in these patients seems to be related not only with the visual and refractive results but also improvement observed in trait anxiety.
