The recent decade has included huge achievements in the development for information technologies in healthcare. Now, these technologies can be employed as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information technologies in healthcare are crucial to store, manage and exchange the clinical data. On the other hand, the success or failure of a specific technology relies on the acceptance to use that technology. There is a need to assess the user's technology acceptance prior to the development or improvements for that technology. The study objective is to systematically review the studies that empirically had evaluated the acceptance of technology in healthcare through the technology acceptance model (TAM), its extensions and integrated models based on it. Also, the study will highlight the various studied technologies in healthcare arena, and how these technologies can be utilized to provide the health services, as a respond to the on-going pandemic. PRISMA guidelines were used to perform the review; and the search process has been completed using six digital libraries: Google Scholar, PubMed, IEEE Xplore, Springer Link, ACM, and Science Direct. Out of 1768 studies, a total of 99 empirical studies were found to be eligible and included in this study. A thorough statistical analysis was achieved, to understand the situation of technology acceptance as in the recent decade. The analysis included the key factors, as they were extensively utilized to clarify the technology acceptance, along with the key confirmed hypotheses to build robust and valid technology acceptance models in healthcare. It was found that electronic records, tele-medicine and mobile health solutions have attracted the most of researchers in the last ten years. Where the acceptance of those solutions was explored, through various user types and settings, within different countries particularly Taiwan and the United States; who are leading this research domain.

Objective: This review evaluated the impact of a digitized computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) system and described barriers and facilitators for introducing a digitized system. Data Sources: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Medline, and CINAHL using keywords. Articles in English during the last 10 years were included. Study Selection and Data Extraction: Study selection was presented using a PRISMA flow diagram. Forty-eight studies were included. Data from the articles were presented to address each of the three objectives. Data Synthesis: CPOE systems improved the quality of care provided but also introduced new types of errors. Facilitating factors for implementation included leadership, stakeholder engagement, training, and user-centered design. Inadequate training, software design, changes in workload, and workflow disruptions were identified as barriers. Recommendations for implementation included dedicated training of users, user-centered design, a backup for system downtimes, and stakeholder engagement. Conclusion: Application of knowledge of the facilitators and barriers for the introduction of a CPOE system supports this change-management process within the specific context and augurs for more successful implementation.

Technology Acceptance in Healthcare: A Systematic Review

Understanding the factors affecting the use of healthcare technologies is a crucial topic that has been extensively studied, specifically during the last decade. These factors were studied using different technology acceptance models and theories. However, a systematic review that offers extensive understanding into what affects healthcare technologies and services and covers distinctive trends in large-scale research remains lacking. Therefore, this review aims to systematically review the articles published on technology acceptance in healthcare. From a yield of 1768 studies collected, 142 empirical studies have met the eligibility criteria and were extensively analyzed. The key findings confirmed that TAM and UTAUT are the most prevailing models in explaining what affects the acceptance of various healthcare technologies through different user groups, settings, and countries. Apart from the core constructs of TAM and UTAUT, the results showed that anxiety, computer self-efficacy, innovativeness, and trust are the most influential factors affecting various healthcare technologies. The results also revealed that Taiwan and the USA are leading the research of technology acceptance in healthcare, with a remarkable increase in studies focusing on telemedicine and electronic medical records solutions. This review is believed to enhance our understanding through a number of theoretical contributions and practical implications by unveiling the full potential of technology acceptance in healthcare and opening the door for further research opportunities.
