Impact of consumer‐directed care on quality of life in the community aged care sector

Abstract: Although no discernible differences in overall quality of life were found, higher levels of self-reported control and independence for those in receipt of CDC suggest that the main policy objectives of transferring "choice" and "control" away from the aged care provider and to the individual are being met. “…The reasons for these differences are not entirely clear. In a related study, our team found that CDC was associated with improved levels of control, and older people who were newly initiated to CDC at lower levels of care demonstrated a stronger tendency to participate in the direction and delivery of their own care than early transitions . Hence, it may be that as service providers and consumers became more familiar and comfortable with CDC and as it became more embedded as an established service model, the volume and frequency of administration and care co‐ordination expenses reduced.…”

“…Yet, Bowers et al [ 19 ] argue that models of care delivery such as CDC must be based on mutuality and/or reciprocity if older people with high support needs are to live well in later life. Given that the resource implications and costs associated with CDC can be substantial, it has been argued [ 3 , 20 , 21 ] that it is important to specifically identify the health, well-being and quality of life (QOL) gains associated with CDC use compared to Provider Directed Care services (PDC).…”
