The global tourism industry was badly affected during the Covid-19 pandemic. Popular tourism destinations like the island of Crete have undergone devastating shocks. The impacts of coronavirus on tourism in Crete during the period 2018-2022 have been studied in order to investigate the gradual recovery after the end of the pandemic. The current work is important for the island's tourism industry, considering the large share of tourism in the island’s income and prosperity. The annual tourist arrivals in Crete during this period have been analyzed and compared with the tourist arrivals in Greece. The results indicated that tourist arrivals in Crete have been sharply decreased by 74.98% in 2020 compared to 2019 while in 2022 they have exceeded by 4.98% the arrivals of 2019. Tourism arrivals in Greece have been reduced by 78.22% in 2020 compared to 2019 while in 2022 they were still 9.66% lower compared to 2019. The present work is important for all stakeholders of the island’s tourism industry indicating the quick recovery and the revival of tourism in Crete in the post-pandemic period. The rapid recovery of the tourism industry in Crete can be attributed to the brand name of the island as a global tourism destination and its popularity and attractiveness to international travelers.

It is crucial for a city to ensure economic stability and growth, along with social security and prosperity, not only for the present, but also for future generations. Increasingly, researchers are highlighting the need to apply sustainable urban growth principles to the field of urban development, arguing that this would reduce the negative impacts of urbanization processes (poverty, air pollution, unemployment, and crime). At the same time, cities are competing with one another to maintain their position in the urban hierarchy, not only in the short term, but also in the long term. The COVID-19 pandemic affected many areas of our everyday life: over 5.85 million deaths, increased unemployment, the introduction of restrictions, the closure of national borders, and various other circumstances have all undoubtedly affected to a certain degree those factors which serve to influence competitiveness. The aim of this article is to conduct an integrated competitiveness assessment of the Baltic capitals within the context of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for the period 2015–2020, according to an integrated assessment model for urban competitiveness (MDK), which is based upon the principles of sustainable development. A systematic and comparative analysis of the concepts published in the scientific literature has been performed, the concepts of sustainable city and sustainable urban competitiveness have been formed, research and methods of urban competitiveness evaluation have been carried out, and a comprehensive competitiveness assessment of the results of the study showed that the evaluation of integrated competitiveness of a sustainable city in the context of the impact of COVID-19 (using the Baltic capitals as an example in the period 2015–2020), in terms of the multi-criteria SAW and TOPSIS evaluation methods, is in the highest position in 2016–2019. Vilnius is in second place during the whole period 2016–2019. Riga takes third place in 2015–2019 (except in 2020, when it exchanges places with Vilnius and takes second place). Meanwhile, the results of the COPRAS multicriteria method differ from those discussed above. In 2016, 2019, and 2020, Tallinn is in the highest position, and in 2015, 2017, and 2018, it is surpassed by Vilnius. Riga remained in third place from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, Vilnius took over this position.

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Development of the Segment of the International Tourism Market in Ukraine Focused on Arab Tourists

The article is devoted to determining the set of external and internal prerequisites for the extending influx of Arab countries’ tourists to Ukraine in 2021 under the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions introduced in most countries. Quantitative characteristics of the flow of tourists are outlined. The main characteristics and preferences of tourists from Arab countries who visited Ukraine are determined. It is established that in conditions of restrictions caused by COVID-19, they consider Ukraine as an alternative vocation location to traditional places in European countries. A generalized profile of these tourists has been compiled. It can serve as an information base for improving tourist products (services) and the system of service rendering. An assessment of prospects for developing the international tourism market segment in Ukraine focused on tourists from Arab countries has been made. The study results can be used to make effective management decisions in the field of international tourism at the state and regional levels, as well as at the level of individual tourism service providers in the context of the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic and its completion.
