The purpose of this study is to estimate the costs borne by farming households due to peatland fires. The research location was Air Sugihan District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, and 3 villages were selected representing the district i.e., Rengas Abang Village, Nusa Karta Village, and Jadi Mulya Village. Twenty samples of farmer households were taken as respondents. Data collection activities were carried out in August‒September 2021. Data analysis methods used Cost of Illness, Loss of Earnings, Equivalency Analysis, and Loss on Farming. Economic losses due to forest and peatland fires in Air Sugihan District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency amounted to IDR773.338.080 with 1.91% of medical expenses, 0.27% of additional cost of drinking water, 41.91% of increase in farming costs, and losses of farmer income by 55.91%, or IDR557,160/week/farmer household with a total of 1,388 households. The costs paid by farming households in Air Sugihan District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency due to peatland fires, increased substantially compared to the cost paid before the fire was occurred. It is concluded that in minimizing the impact of forest and peatland fires it is necessary to carry out interventions so that similar incidents do not recur in the future. Spatial Modeling of Forest and Land Fire Susceptibility Using the Information Value Method in Kotawaringin Barat Regency, Indonesia

Kotawaringin Barat is a high-risk area for forest and land fires; a total of 564.13 km2 of forest land was burned from 2015 to 2022, the majority of which spread to peatlands. The goal of this contribution is to use the information value method (IVM) to construct forest and land fire spatial susceptibility maps for the Kotawaringin Barat regency. MODIS hotspots from 2016 to 2020 were used as the dependent variable, with six independent variables included in the modeling. According to the data, there were 925 hotspots detected in Kotawaringin Barat between 2016 and 2020. The areas closest to rivers and roads are more susceptible to forest and land fires, while the areas closest to settlements are safer. Flat slopes have an IVM of 0.697, while peatlands have an IVM of 0.667, making them the most susceptible to forest and land fires. Furthermore, the most susceptive land covers are swamps (IVM = 1.071) and shrublands (IVM = 0.024). According to the IVM model of susceptibility mapping, Kotawaringin Barat is categorized as very high (18.32%) and high (27.97%) risk. About 33.57% of the study area is classified as moderately susceptible, while the remaining 20.14% is classified as low risk. The accuracy of the IVM for forest and land fires is 66.87% (AUC), indicating that the model can be used for susceptibility assessments particularly for very high to high susceptibility areas.

Fire-Induced Multiple Changes in Electron Transfer Properties of Peat Soil Organic Matter: The Role of Functional Groups, Graphitic Carbon, and Iron

Peatland fires induced changes in electron transfer properties and relevant electroactive structures of peat soil organic matter (PSOM) remain ambiguous, impeding comprehension of postfire biogeochemical processes. Here, we revealed temperaturedependent electron exchange capacity (EEC) of PSOM dynamics through simulated peat soil burning (150−500 °C), which extremely changed postfire microbial Fe-nanoparticles reduction and methanogenesis. EEC diminished significantly (60−75% loss) due to phenolic-quinone moieties depletion with increasing temperature, regardless of oxygen availability. The final EEC in oxic burning surpassed that of anoxic burning by 1.5 times, attributed to additional quinones from oxygen incorporation. Notably, EEC exhibited heat resistance up to 200 °C and stabilized above 350 °C. Additionally, fire reshaped the EEC-relevant redox-active moieties. Heterocyclic-N generated from burning predominantly contributed to the electron-accepting capacity (EAC) alongside quinones, while phenolic moieties and bonded Fe(II) enhanced the electron-donating capacity (EDC). However, the preferential binding of heterocyclic-N to Fe(II) restricted the EDC of Fe(II). Interestingly, the decrease in EAC declined its electron-shuttling effects in microbial Fe nanoparticle reduction, but fire-induced graphitic carbon formation increased the electrical conductivity (EC) of PSOM, promoting electron transfer. Further, enhanced EC may facilitate methanogenesis in postfire peatlands. These findings advance our understanding of elemental biogeochemical cycles and greenhouse emission mechanisms in postfire peatlands.
