Impact of gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes of sheep, and the role of advanced molecular tools for exploring epidemiology and drug resistance - an Australian perspective

Abstract: Parasitic nematodes (roundworms) of small ruminants and other livestock have major economic impacts worldwide. Despite the impact of the diseases caused by these nematodes and the discovery of new therapeutic agents (anthelmintics), there has been relatively limited progress in the development of practical molecular tools to study the epidemiology of these nematodes. Specific diagnosis underpins parasite control, and the detection and monitoring of anthelmintic resistance in livestock parasites, presently a ma… Show more

“…Estas herramientas se aplican en las investigaciones de la epidemiología del parásito y de detección de resistencia a los medicamentos (Roeber et al, 2013). Por otra parte, la producción de diferentes cultivos se ve afectada por una variedad de organismos patógenos que perjudican gravemente la producción, desarrollo y vigor de las plantas (Back et al, 2002).…”

“…Blood feeding by H. contortus results in haemorrhagic gastritis, oedema, diarrhoea and death in severe infections, leading to significant economic impact through decreased livestock production (Mavrot et al 2015;McLeod 1995;Roeber et al 2013). Sheep can develop effective immunity to H. contortus infection and vaccine-induced protection using H. contortus-derived molecules has been demonstrated, suggesting that the control of this parasite through vaccination is possible (Nisbet et al 2016).…”

“…These infections are responsible for a significant economic impact due to weight loss, reduced milk production and delayed growth (ROEBER et al, 2013). Development of nematode resistance to drugs commercially available encouraged the search for products of plant origin (FERREIRA et al, 2013).…”
