Impact of human behavior on the spread of African swine fever virus: what every veterinarian should know

Abstract: African swine fever virus was first identified and characterized in Africa in the early 1900s, but it has spread exponentially in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean since 2018. While it is a disease that exclusively affects swine, thus posing no infectious risk to human health, the virus’s resiliency and human behavior have facilitated the rapid global dissemination of the virus over the past 4 years. In this Currents in One Health, we will review its epidemiology, viral characteristics, host range, and current p… Show more

“…In this regard, the portability of a LAMP PCR machine for fluorometric detection or the austere setup with which the colorimetric LAMP can be performed, would suggest that these tools can be applied for surveillance even in remote regions or backyard farms. This is important, considering that, as high as 98% of the outbreaks have been related to backyard productions in the Dominican Republic (Gonzales et al, 2021;Rademacher et al, 2022). In addition, wildlife plays a key role in the epidemiology of ASFV and must be taken into account in any surveillance program (Mighell and Ward, 2021;Sauter-Louis et al, 2021a;Urbano and Ferreira, 2022).…”

As the common ground here is freedom from both pathogens, educating the industry on science-based biosecurity principles is needed to properly implement efficacious prevention strategies at the level of both the national herd and local herd.…”

“…A s of this writing, a pathogen known as African swine fever virus (ASFV) is looming on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, 1 721 miles from Miami, Florida. Introduction of ASFV to the US swine national herd would immediately stop the exportation of pork, with long-term projections of $50 billion in losses.…”
