Impact of Hydrophilic Modification of Synthetic Dialysis Membranes on Hemocompatibility and Performance

Abstract: The dialyzer is the core element in the hemodialysis treatment of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). During hemodialysis treatment, the dialyzer replaces the function of the kidney by removing small and middle-molecular weight uremic toxins, while retaining essential proteins. Meanwhile, a dialyzer should have the best possible hemocompatibility profile as the perpetuated contact of blood with artificial surfaces triggers complement activation, coagulation and immune cell activation, and even low-l… Show more

“…In addition, development of facile and accurate methods to determine (separately) the native and denatured albumin concentration, in the context of in vivo tests, would greatly aid these efforts. The suggested specific research targets can be pursued in the context of significant ongoing efforts aiming to improve biocompatibility of materials towards optimisation of HC modes [ 11 , 12 ].…”

“…Additionally, due to reducing hemofilter performance and a decline in flux, protein adsorption on the membrane also affects its hemocompatibility. Upon the adsorption of coagulation factors onto the artificial surface, the proteins undergo conformational changes or denaturation, which promotes thrombus formation [ 1 ].…”

“…In that condition, like with any other submerged filtration membrane, the hemofilter loses its properties over time and use which results in a rapid decline in flux and makes it impossible to accurately assess the effectiveness of applied therapy. The most significant reason for this loss is the formation of a so-called second membrane when a biofilm layer is formed within minutes of contact with aqueous solutions [ 1 ]. The main factor of fouling in low-pressure membranes such as MF and UF is organic matter composed of proteins, polysaccharides and bacteria cells suspended in feed [ 2 ].…”

“…PVP occupies a special place among a wide range of water-soluble polymers due to its unique properties-surface activity, high hydrophilicity, a wide range of solubility, and a pronounced tendency to complex formation [43]. In addition, PVP is widely used in membrane technologies [40,[44][45][46][47]. Films formed on the basis of polyamide/PVP solutions in formic acid are characterized by hydrophilic properties and increased strength characteristics [23].…”
