Impact of Inadequate Fine‐needle Aspiration Cytology on outcome of Patients with Palpable Breast Lesions

Abstract: Breast cancer was present in 8.5% of the inadequate FNAC specimens. When clinical suspicion of malignancy is high, an excision biopsy is advised in patients with inadequate FNAC specimens. If properly managed with triple tests and good clinical judgement, the inadequate FNAC specimens do not delay treatment in patients with breast cancer.

“…Every patient with breast tumor should undergo triple test to make early and accurate diagnosis. FNA is widely used in the diff erential diagnosis of breast tumors because of the high level of accuracy, rapid results, and for being a less invasive procedure than tissue biopsy 12,13 . Th e accuracy, sensitivity and specifi city found in our study showed FNA of breast tumors to be a reliable method for diff erential diagnosis of benign from malignant masses.…”

“…FNAC of the breast can reduce the number of open breast biopsies. [3][4][5][6] The triple diagnostic method (consisting of clinical evaluation, mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology) gives a precise diagnosis and reduces the risk of a missed diagnosis of breast cancer to <1% 7 .The aim of this study is to find out the common causes of breast lump at different ages and offer treatment.…”

“…FNA of ill-defined masses like or lesions with hyalinization and deeply located lumps may also be contributed to the inconclusive diagnosis . 15,16 Many inflammatory breast lesions create confusion as these are presented as a palpable mass. "Mammographic, sonographic, and magnetic resonance imaging findings may not always distinguish some of the benign lesions like duct ectasia, fat necrosis from a malignant lesion.…”
