Daughter yield deviations (DYDs) of bulls and yield deviations (YDs) of cows, besides estimated breeding values (EBVs), are standard measures of animals' genetic merits in routine genetic evaluations worldwide. In this contribution, we first point out differences and similarities between DYDs and EBVs calculated for milk, fat and protein yields. While the latter measure represents the additive polygenic value of an animal, the former consists of both the additive polygenic and residual components. Then, a summary of DYDs and YDs calculated for the Polish population of dairy cattle is presented. The estimated correlations between DYDs and EBVs are generally high, but vary considerably depending on the minimum number of daughters used for calculation of DYDs and on the accuracy of calculated DYDs. Using DYDs estimated for each production year for 16 452 bulls, we demonstrate how to use DYDs for the validation of genetic trend estimated in the model used for genetic evaluation. Based on genotypic data of 252 bulls, we show that DYDs can be used for the estimation of candidate gene effects. For each of the yield traits, the within-bull genetic trend was relatively high, ranging between 1.39% of genetic standard deviation per production year for milk and 7.67% of genetic standard deviation per production year for fat, both in the 2nd lactation. Out of 8 polymorphisms tested, 5 showed a significant correlation with DYD, with the highest effect attributed to the polymorphism within the leptin receptor gene, whose additive effect was estimated as 247.33 kg of milk at 2nd parity.

This study was conducted to identify gene polymorphisms and to investigate the relationships of polymorphisms with yield and composition of milk from Holstein cows. Significant relationships of growth hormone (GH), leptin (LEP) and myogenic factor 5 (MYF5) gene polymorphisms with 305‐day milk yield were observed (P < 0.01). Signal transducers and activators of transcription 5A (STAT5A) gene polymorphism did not show any significant relationships with investigated traits (P > 0.05). With regard to the 305‐day milk yield, GH‐LV, LEP‐AA and AB and MYF5‐GG genotypes were found to be superior over the other genotypes. It was concluded based on present findings that GH, LEP and MYF5 genes could be used as candidate genes for milk yield of Holstein cows.

Genotyping of the leptin gene locus (LEP) (SNP: R25C, Y7F, and A80V) has been conducted in cows from two cattle droves (n = 106 and n = 34) and in bulls of Ayrshire cattle (n = 9) that are intensively used at present for artificial insemination in cows in Krasnodar krai. The absence of A80V polymorphism (C→T at position 95691973 bp of leptin gene) has been established in the genotypes of Ayrshire cattle as com pared to Holstein cattle; however, the F allele (Y7F site A→T at position 95689996 bp of LEP gene), which is rare in Holstein cattle, was shown to be frequent in Ayrshire cows and producer bulls (with a frequency of 0.22-0.79). The heterozygosity did not exceed 0.11 in adult animals, which might be evidence of a decreased vitality in animals bearing the FF genotype. Moreover, the CC genotype (R25C site T→C at position 95690050 bp of LEP gene) was revealed to be linked to the YY genotype (Y7F site) in 97% of cases from pos sible combinations of the CCYY, CCYF, and CCFF genotypes, while the FF genotype (Y7F site) was observed to be linked to the RR genotype (R25C site) in 100% of cases of possible combinations of FFCC, FFRC, and FFRR genotypes.
