Impact of leptin gene polymorphisms on breeding value for milk production traits in cattle

Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyse the relationship between the Arg4Cys and Ala59Val polymorphisms of the bovine leptin gene, and the milk traits, based on the breeding values of AI proven bulls. A total of 187 individuals was analysed. The following allele frequencies have been found: 0.55 (C) and 0.45 (T) for Arg4Cys, and 0.73 (C) and 0.27 (T) for Ala59Val. Arg4Cys TT genotype has a highly significant increasing effect on milk yield and a significant increasing effect on protein yield, whereas no marked inf… Show more

“…Leptin gene mutations have been analysed more intensively. Increased milk yield was found to be correlated with the R25C TT genotype (= genotype 11 in this paper) (Buchanan et al 2003;Komisarek et al 2005) and with the A80V TT genotype (= genotype 22) (Madeja et al 2004). …”

“…On the hand, there are other studies reporting non‐insignificant relationships of SNPs in LEP gene with milk yield traits (Komisarek et al . ). It was concluded, based on the present and earlier findings, that the LEP gene was a promising gene to be used in improving milk yield traits during a 305‐day lactation period.…”

“…The leptin gene and its polymorphisms were stud ied to a major extent because of the energy exchange in meat cattle and milk productivity in Holstein animals [4,5]. R25C polymorphism was shown to be associ ated with the fat and protein content in milk, easy calving, and gestation duration [2].…”
