Impact of Probiotic Bacteria on Respiratory Allergy Disorders

Abstract: Respiratory allergy is a common disease with an increased prevalence worldwide. The effective remedy is still unknown, and a new therapeutic approach is highly desirable. The review elaborates the influence of probiotic bacteria on respiratory allergy prevention and treatment with particular emphasis on the impact of the current methods of their administration – oral and intranasal. The background of the respiratory allergy is complex thus, we focused on the usefulness of probiotics in the alleviation of diffe… Show more

“…Another important aspect requires adequate attention: there is evidence that most probiotics fail the primary prevention of asthma [ 78 , 79 ]. Contrariwise, some convincing studies proved that probiotic supplementation reduced asthma severity in children with pre-existing asthma [ 47 , 48 , 49 ].…”

“…For instance, improved knowledge about the interaction between the gastrointestinal and respiratory microbiomes could serve as a foundational understanding and guide the application of oral probiotics as a treatment potential in the management of allergic disorders of the respiratory tract. 5 , 30 Similarly, a thorough understanding of how cow’s milk formula and cesarean section births result in dysbiosis and increase susceptibility to allergy and asthma development can serve as a scientific rationale for advocating for breast feeding and natural births to reduce the risk of the development of allergic diseases later in life. 31 , 32 Collectively, these examples demonstrate the important need to further develop continuing medical education curricula to include the most updated information about the role of the microbiome in disease pathogenesis as well as potential therapeutic applications to prevent the development and/or mitigate symptoms of diseases of public health importance in Saudi Arabia, such as allergies and asthma.…”

“…SCFAs are also able to generate an extrathymic peripheral Treg cell pool, linked to dampening allergic airway diseases. However, airway bacteria do not produce SCFAs in substantial amounts, likely due to the absence of substrates [ 45 ].…”
