Impact of spacing and pruning on quantity, quality and economics of Douglas-fir sawn timber: scenario and sensitivity analysis

Abstract: Controlling the long-term effect of management on the quantity and properties of individual boards is a fundamental challenge for silviculture. Within this basic study on Douglas-fir, we have investigated the sensitivity of the net present value (NPV) to three most common planting densities and a prominent pruning strategy. We therefore have applied an individual tree growth model, which represents intrinsic stem structure as a result of crown competition. The model extrapolated board strength development to t… Show more

“…Higher extraction ratio implies greater economic returns from production of wood products, which could also serve as long-term carbon storage or fuel for BECCS through methods such as oxyfuel combustion 5 . However, an in-depth economic study such as net present value analysis is necessary to fully understand the implications on stand- and landscape-level 38 , 39 . Nevertheless, our study shows that modeling biomass allocation strategy of Z .…”

“…Recent studies also indicate that plantations with 62 500 seedlings of E. camaldulensis per ha and 81 633 plants of E. globulus per ha were reported in some areas of the region. Planting seedlings with closer spacing than the standard spacing reduces production and wood quality (Rais et al, 2020;Rocha et al, 2016). Moreover, the majority of planted seedlings do not receive any silvicultural treatment after planting (Bekele, 2011b;Tadesse et al, 2019).…”

“…However, there has been a long-standing controversial issue of how pruning severity affects tree growth (Clark & Matheny, 2010). Pruning can negatively affect growth through excessive intensity (Rais et al, 2020). Therefore, most pruning prescriptions are based on empirical data combining operational needs with tree growth responses (Maurin & DesRochers, 2013;Shimada, 2017) or based on previous pruning studies.…”
